I’ve been squirming for weeks to make this post, and share what we did over the shut down with you guys! This pretty girl, our 1888 Koken Congress, was long overdue for some TLC, but being in daily operation, we never had the chance to take her down....and then we did. Our first order of closing down the business was to get her safely home so that we could follow the sheltering guidelines and handle this gorgeous beast at the same time. And then we dove into this labor of lov...e head first! I’ve reupholstered a handful of our chairs, but never one whose bones had had such a tough ride with previous reupholsters. We had some structural work to do, and spent some extra time loving on that wood and metal. It was a perfect time for my apprentice @_kacinicole to learn another old school trade and become more intimate with, and appreciative of, one of our industry’s most treasured fixtures. Ok, so this is gonna be weird....but kinda amazing at the same time, so just do your best to wrap your head around it. We were so disheartened to hear that Governor Ivy stuck Alabama’s barbershops in the last possible phase of reopening. SO, what we have decided to do, in lieu of you jacking yourself up because you can’t wait any longer, and all of you who are loyal to shops in Alabama are hurtin’ for a haircut pretty badly, is this: If your ‘home shop’ is in Alabama, and you... NEED a haircut before they are allowed to reopen, come see us across the bridge. We will have a clipboard at the reception counter. You will be encouraged to fill out the date, your name, your home shop and barber. Old School Barber Shoppe WILL NOT TAKE A COMMISSION FROM YOUR HAIRCUT, but will stroke your home shop a check on their reopen date for their half of your service. Yeah. I said what I said. We will pay another shop for us cutting your hair. This is where it gets weird....we sincerely aren’t even gunning for your continued business after they get the go-ahead. We are doing this to HELP your Alabama based barbershop make money during this time when they are not legally allowed to. We, as an industry, are hurting....about as bad as that head of yours. We are booked for the rest of the week with our own clientele, so you’re encouraged to go online (website, FB, or IG) or call to book your appointment. You can put in your booking notes that you’re a super-ultra-loyal client of another shop if you’d like, but still make sure to sign the clip board since that will be the register from which we tally what we will be paying your shops. You need a haircut. We are open. We are more than capable. We have extreme sanitation and disinfection standards in place. We will take care of you. And then give you right back. Swear. Remember guys, it’s not cheating if they’re still getting paid. Side note: We have always had a strict ‘no-talk-shit policy’ regarding other barbershops, because face it, it makes said talkers look petty and unprofessional, so no worries there.
