The argument goes that Black Americans should focus more on education, family structure and homeownership, put money in Black-owned banks, start more Black-owned businesses, increase savings and investment and generally take personal responsibility the way other "model minorities" have. The fact of the matter evidenced by decades of reporting from the Federal Reserve System, Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, and academic and professional studies is that the wealth gap is the product of centuries of inequality and racism that has grown too large to be impacted significantly by individual actions, achievements or choices.

sharing from English Ave Neighborhood Association: Dear Neighbor: The English Avenue Neighborhood Association (EANA) exists to promote, coordinate and implement community plans and to engage residents in promoting the livability and environment of the neighborhood. By now, you have heard about the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is a disease that has infected many people around the world and is now being spread in the United States - including the city of Atlanta.... While this disease causes us to be concerned, we want to reaffirm that we are here as neighbors to care for and support one another. We encourage you to take precautions to prevent the spread of this disease, as it is very serious and can result in death. Symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. To prevent spreading this disease, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises everyone to: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Use use hand sanitizer as often as possible or if soap and water are not available. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Put distance between yourself and other people (at least 6 feet). This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. This disease especially affects older adults over the age of 65 and those with underlying health conditions. For these groups, the CDC recommends staying home if possible. Everyone is encouraged to practice Social Distancing which means to physically distance yourself from groups of 10 or more in order to stop or slow the spread of a contagious diseases. As a matter of fact , the CDC recommends that we ALL stay home as much as possible. For more information on COVID-19, please visit www.cdc.gov or call 1-800-232-4636. If you think you have been exposed to or have contracted COVID-19, please call the Good Samaritan Health Center at (404) 523-6571 or your doctor’s office. Please call first before visiting the doctor. If you are experiencing difficulty breathing, please call 911. For other non-emergency needs, please call the City of Atlanta’s 311 hotline or the United Way’s 211 hotline. We are here for each other and want to make sure everyone’s needs are met. If you have any questions, please reach out to any of us directly. Stay safe and be well.
