We love this excerpt about what the white coat means to this young Meharry Medical College medical student: "My white coat represents the conquering of the obstacles in my life. My journey to becoming a physician has not been a smooth road and is truly a testament of hard work, determination, and a drive to succeed. Instead of allowing obstacles in my journey to discourage me, I used my diligence as fuel to persevere. These obstacles allowed me to strengthen and enhance the s...kills and traits that are essential to becoming a great doctor. Managing the obstacles in my life has prepared me to empathize with patients from underserved communities, and, hopefully, I can be a beacon of light in their lives to motivate and encourage them to persevere. Last, my white coat symbolizes hope for future generations of black and brown people that there are no limits to what they can achieve despite what society might tell them." - Black Forte, Melanin Doc, 29Jan2020 | Read the full article here: https://www.melanindocs.com/what-my-white-coat-means-to-me/
Dr. Dorothy Lavinia Brown spent her childhood in an orphanage and grew up to become the first African American woman surgeon in the South, eventually being made chief of surgery at Nashville's Riverside Hospital. She was also the first African American woman to be made a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dorothy had wanted to become a physician since she had her tonsils removed as a child, and in 1944 she enrolled at Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tennessee.... She worked through a five-year residency at Meharry and George W. Hubbard Hospital to become Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1955 and the first African American woman to be made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Brown's determination, beliefs, and values helped her to break through barriers in other aspects of her life too. When a young, unmarried patient implored the orphanage-raised physician to adopt her newborn daughter, Brown became the first single adoptive mother in Tennessee, in 1956. Then, in 1966, when redistricting opened the door for a black candidate, Brown was asked to run for a seat in the state legislature. She ran, and she won, becoming the first black woman representative to the state legislature in Tennessee. #blackdoctors #blackexcellence #BlackHistoryMonth See more
