In 1965 Walter Scruggs from Franklin, NC, became the first black enrolled student and the first black varsity athlete in Piedmont College. Walter played in every basketball game as one of our five varsity starters and became the first basketball player in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Piedmont College Theatre presents Carousel, the tumultuous love story of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan, as they both weather losing their jobs, cycles of abuse, and questionable life decisions order to hold their life together. The 2020 top ranking was not the only accolade Niche ascribed to Piedmont College. The website rated Piedmont as No. 4 in the Best Small Colleges in Georgia c...ategory. The ranking includes institutions with an enrollment under 5,000. Piedmont was also ranked No. 7 for Best Value Colleges in Georgia. Each year, Piedmont awards scholarships to virtually all incoming freshmen. In 2019, nearly 1,900 students received academic scholarships and grants valued at approximately $12.5 million. Piedmont College, soon to be Piedmont University, was founded in 1897. The institution has a rising profile and recently purchased 90 acres in Demorest for expansion and will relocate its Athens campus into a newly constructed facility early next year.
