PCFD responded to 5343 Hwy 19, reported structure fire at 9:05 pm Tuesday, December 15, 2020. A multi-family structure was fully involved upon arrival of fire department personnel with report of one person trapped. Personnel made entry into unburned portion of structure attempting to locate the victim. A viable patient was not located in still habitable portions of the structure. A body recovery took place after entry into the structure was deemed safe by chief personnel. The scene was investigated by the State Fire Marshall who determined the cause of the fire was improper use of space heaters. PCFD does not release names of victims. Meansville FD was also on scene to assist with fire extinguishment.

Thank you for your quick response to my neighbors' house fire this evening on Reidsboro Rd. It's simply not true that only chimneys are left when our fire depar...tment responds. This homeplace was saved today, albeit in need of extensive repair, and I thank you for your quick response and for saving this home which is treasured by the family. See more

Lots of interesting discussion around our burn ban post yesterday! For those who may be thinking of "burning anyway," a few reminders ... under Georgia law O.C....G.A. 12-6-90, it’s a misdemeanor to burn without a permit or GFC notification (ag), which means you can be arrested and prosecuted, with a maximum possible sentence of 12 months in jail and a $1000 fine. Suppression charges would apply if a wildfire results from an illegal fire, O.C.G.A. 12-6-21 (you'd get a bill for all time our people and equipment use to contain your fire if it escapes). If the fire escapes onto the property of another, that would be a violation of O.C.G.A. 16-7-63, which is another misdemeanor with the same maximum penalties. Then you can add in criminal/civil liability for the fire/smoke, and any damages or injuries/deaths that could occur from an illegal act. Example: if an illegal fire burns a structure, or smoke from an illegal fire causes an automobile accident, the person burning could be held responsible. Bottom line: it is illegal, with criminal and civil penalties that could become severe, and it’s just not worth the risk.
