Long overdue update from Prager Law on Facebook. We hope you are all safe and well during these uncertain times. But that does not mean there cannot be fun and entertainment... It’s Christmas movie time! Terri J. Vaughn is back behind the camera as director of A Christmas Surprise airing tomorrow night December 5 on BET, and streaming starting December 10 on BET+. A mother gets a Christmas surprise when her daughter announces she's engaged. Now the holiday is thrown ...into chaos as she deals with her less-than-impressive and soon-to-be son-in law, his overbearing mother and an impending wedding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1dA3_O1ykE I know I’ll enjoy laughing and reminiscing about holidays the way they used to be, and will be again soon! And speaking of reminiscing how about going back to your younger years for Sexual Animals available on iTunes on December 8 to rent. Jonathan Wierenga and his team have captured the angst of transitioning from college to real life with both humor and introspection. It will take you back! https://apple.co/2J1zN4t Finally, be on the lookout for a new podcast The Night Witches coming from Gabrielle Pickle and Megan Messmer about the only female fighter pilots in WWII. Gabrielle and Megan have spent years researching these women to tell their stories that have been lost to history. Look for the first episode to drop on Pearl Harbor Day. I don’t want to spoil anything but this is going to be educational AND a cinematic treat for your ears! As always, let me know if I can be of assistance to you or someone you know! In the meantime, here’s to a happy Holiday season and all the good things to come!

The 5th Annual Women in Production Summit on June 27 is focusing on the future. The speakers that the sponsoring organizations have brought together are going to tackle the hard questions the current environment has raised, from what physical production looks like in the Covid-19 Era to how to be your biggest cheerleader to making the Industry not just more diverse but inclusive. I know I am excited to hear Deborah Riley Draper on giving yourself the permission to thrive..., as well as writer/producer Cas Sigers Beedle in conversation with Lori McCreary, past president of the Producers Guild of America. Prager Law can't participate in #theshowmustbepaused because of prior commitments (deadlines don't take a break) but... If the music industry wants to do something to address racial inequality I implore them to start by cleaning up their own house. Thirty years ago this summer I learned about copyright while volunteering at the Center for Southern Folklore in Memphis. ... I learned about it because I was curious why all these amazing musicians were living, or had lived, in abject poverty while their music ruled the airwaves. The answer was one word COPYRIGHT. The urban legends about musicians giving up their copyrights in exchange for a car or refrigerator or a one-time wad of cash are true. These artists were living in poverty and such "gifts" were a king's ransom at the time. These early music grifters took advantage of the artists who laid the foundation for everything you hear today. If I were still involved in the music business I would be calling for reparations and royalty payment reform in conjunction with, Black Out Tuesday.

Even during the age of Covid19 the show must go on... But how? Film and television production requires that crew and talent interact in ways that seem foreign and impossible as we socially distant from friends and family. ... New South Independent and 3rd Shift Media have collaborated to develop a framework for independent productions to follow in an attempt to limit the risk of Covid19 on a set. The team of seasoned and innovative producers consulted experts in the Industry as well as those in health and safety to create a comprehensive plan. They have decided to make the general principles available to others who are looking to resume production. I was honored to consult them on the Covid-19 Independent Film Production Plan, and grateful I can share it with all who may be interested. See you at the movies! Even if it's from our respective couches. https://www.dropbox.com//Covid%2019%20Independent%20Film%2

More details to follow but Prager Law is thrilled to learn that the NCAA has approved revisions to its rules to allow student athletes to profit from their names and likenesses while still students. The devil will be in the details but for now this is a start. Prager Law is uniquely situated to help students and their families navigate the rules and protect their interests. Most importantly, this is an issue that was significantly important to our founder's father who saw... first hand the inequity the former rules had on student athletes. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge. https://www.msn.com//ncaa-board-votes-to-allow/ar-AAJvEP5

Boycotts only work if the people you are boycotting care. The conservatives holding Georgia hostage do not care about the film industry. The continued calls for a boycott does nothing but hurt the film industry and people who work in it.... Georgia provides a passive investment in productions in the form of up to 30% transferable tax credit. Boycotting means passing up free money that can subsidize production of family, and non-family fare. The answer isn't to boycott Georgia. It's to come to Georgia and shoot. Take the money... laugh all the way to the bank. But leaving Georgia just gives Governor Kemp and his cronies a win. Georgia is open for business. Come.

Last night I had the honor of attending the launch of Film Impact Georgia, an initiative to support indie content creation in Georgia. Melissa Simpson and Molly Coffee, the founders, are nothing short of impressive, as are its board of directors and advisors. The speakers last night included the incomparable Deborah Riley Draper of the forthcoming Coffee Will Make You Black Movie and Peter Stathopoulos of Picture It Productions. I was happy to (over) supply cupcakes for the occasion!

A few weeks ago there was a dust up because Netflix cancelled the revived and wonderful "One Day at a Time" after three seasons. Now Santa Clarita Diet has been cancelled, also after three seasons. Many other shows on Netflix have been cancelled at the three season mark. Netflix is a data driven platform. What can a pattern of airing three seasons tell us about their business model and our viewing behaviors?

I will be retiring this page soon as I've joined Cohen Cooper Estep & Allen as a partner. But before I go, I have to share this fabulous, fantastic and wonderful news... Georgia State University is lucky to have Brennen Dicker on its team. I know he will be a great resource for the students and faculty alike in the Creative Media Industries Institute.
