Afforestt is a service provider that has been designing and installing native forest in many places around the world for the last 10 years. Their model includes establishing dense stands (copses) of locally seed-propagated native trees in appropriately prepared soil to kick start a natural process of biological productivity that can create a self-stable forest in just a few years. Their focus is small, but stable forests quickly established in urban and suburban land use. ...They have recently open sourced their methodologies and we are going to be experimenting with and integrating some of these concepts in projects we are implementing over the next year and longer. Here is a link to a short TED talk to introduce the founder and his methods. Here too is a link to the website containing all the open source materials. blob:https://embed.ted.com/be9d08cc-b92b-4735-8db8-3e82f548444d https://www.afforestt.com/

Some very solid ecological restoration research showing significant population increase of sage grouse (an aptly named sagebrush obligate) when encroaching junipers are removed from range. We were just studying other bird species in similar habitat. https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com//10./ecs2.3551

June is the best time to document breeding bird species in North American landscapes. Have you ever participated in a breeding bird survey? Would you like too? The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service to monitor the status and trends of North American bird populations. Following a rigorous protocol, BBS data are collected by... thousands of dedicated participants along thousands of randomly established roadside routes throughout the continent. Professional BBS coordinators and data managers work closely with researchers and statisticians to compile and deliver these population data and population trend analyses on more than 400 bird species, for use by conservation managers, scientists, and the general public. To learn more and get involved start here: https://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/ Our friend Tammy Martin just completed this route in northwest Ohio. She is now part of a 56-year legacy and part of this massive bird inventory dataset (program began in 1966).
