Tonight Station 4 (Lakemont), Station12 (Tiger), Station 7 (Tallulah Falls), and paid firefighters responded to a residential chimney fire. Did you know according to statistics available, there are over 25,000 chimney fires per year in the US that are responsible for over 125 million dollars in property damage. If you think there is a chimney fire in your chimney, what do you do? 1. First, evacuate the home and make sure that everyone is out of harm’s way.... 2. Call the fire department to let them know about the situation. If the situation is deemed safe and everyone is out of harm’s ways, other actions may be taken. 3. Take all measures to cut off the fire’s air supply. This includes closing the glass doors in front of the fire and shutting the fire damper as well. 4. Spray down the roof with a garden hose to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas of the home. 5. Wait for the fire department to respond and direct them where to go when they arrive.
Rabun County Fire Chief James Reed recently delivered new equipment to Station 4. It’s a 2,000 gallon tanker for hauling water (lots of water) to fire scenes. The tanker is mounted on a Kenworth chassis and is more maneuverable on our narrow roads than the truck previously used. Your tax dollars at work to benefit the Lakemont and Wiley communities. Drive by Station 4 this weekend and take a look.
It’s very dry out there and the humidity is very low. As always, a permit is required for all outdoor burning. Sta 4 volunteers Zack Scruggs, Philip Brown and Capt John Murray responded Tuesday afternoon to a 1 acre brush fire in the 6000 block of Old US 441 and received assistance from Sta 1 firefighters as well. The icy roads contributed to a Sunday morning rollover crash on 441 S in Station 4’s territory. The driver was not hurt. Chris Fairholt and Cody Jordan of Station 4 responded. Station 5 (Dillard) firefighter and paramedic Brandon Fields was on scene and cut the windshield to free the driver. Station 7 at Tallulah Falls also responded so a good team effort from Rabun County Fire Services volunteers.
Station 4 volunteers with assistance from Stations 1 and 12 responded effectively Friday evening to a brush fire near a residence on Emerald Lane. An electrical problem on a Georgia Power pole burned the pole in half and started a fire on the ground. Station 4 Lt. Zack Scruggs, Firefighters Philip Brown, Cody Jordan, Chris Fairholt and Chris Wright responded. Thanks guys !
