On April 24, 2020, Sister Macrina Wiederkehr, OSB, a wonderful woman who has profoundly touched mine, and so many others' hearts succumbed to an inoperable brain tumor. I'm grateful that she had four months surrounded by her sisters, family, caregivers, and the monastery's beautiful grounds. I fondly remember sitting with Macrina in numerous circles discussing how St. Scholastica's planning would lead to "good zeal." Macrina would graciously let others share first. Then, co...me up with a quote, an image, the thread that helped weave all of us in the circle together united in hope to believe, "... there is enough good zeal to shine through even the barriers we put up to block it out." Her insight opened us to the understanding that "we, too, have curtains that we use, often unconsciously, to hide the story of our lives. Our story which is rich and vibrant and can give warmth, energy, joy, hope and passion to others is crucial for the health of the world." While she is gone from this earth, she will be with us forever in our memories and her writings. "Giving yourself up to love is melting into God. It is falling into the hands of the living God with complete abandon. This is the deep, interior prayer for which we have been striving. Here we must let go of our dependency on thoughts, words, and images. We go into the beautiful darkness. We stop struggling. We let the angels carry us. Surrender is the only word we know."
