In case you weren’t aware, your butt is pretty amazing! Let’s talk about the largest muscle in the body! The Glutes!! The three muscles that make up your ...glutes are the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and the gluteus minimus! These muscles are so important in preventing back pain, hip pain, and knee injuries. Did you know these muscles are the strongest in the body?? Or at least they are suppose to be! Weakness doesn’t just exist in the older adult population. You would be surprised at how many athletes and runners have a weak butt. I love to include exercises to increase strength in these muscles in my fitness routines and physical therapy treatments. Together these 3 muscles work to help us perform our basic activities of daily living! For example, rising from a chair, ascending, and descending stairs. So, its no coincidence to see a high prevalence of knee injuries related to squatting/stairs if the glutes are not functioning properly. The gluteus medius is my favorite muscle. It is considered a stabilizer of the hip and pelvis. It is active during ambulation, and supports us as we stand on one leg to swing our other leg through to contact the ground. It also performs hip abduction, kicking the leg out to the side. I bet if you have a knee, hip or low back injury this muscle isn’t as strong as it could be. Check out these articles for some evidence of how important proper function and strength really is! Robinson and Nee’s 2007 study of 10 females who sought physical therapy for unilateral knee pain demonstrated significantly less hip extension, abduction, and external rotation strength than the same number of control subjects with no known knee http://www.jospt.org//articleID.1238,ty/article_detail.asp Average hip abductor (Glute medius) torque in 24 distance runners with ITBS was found by Fredericson et al (2000) to be significantly weaker than that of the uninjured limb and controls. pathology.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10959926

When physical therapy did not relieve post-mastectomy pain satisfactorily, dry needling and low-pulse electrical stimulation was added for the pectoralis major ...and minor muscles, drain scar, areas around the breast capsule, lateral chest wall, and trigger points within the latissumus dorsi muscle. The patient reported a 70% improvement in symptoms following one treatment, 80% improvement following the second treatment, and a 90% resolution of pain following her third visit. Furthermore, the patient reported a self-improvement in function, as she was able to shovel snow for 3 hours following her last visit. This case report shows that dry needling is a reasonable treatment consideration when myofascial trigger points and fascial tightness are a part of postbreast cancer sequela of a patient with breast cancer. New in the literature: A single session of dry needling (DN) was effective in decreasing pain, DASH score, pulley-tendon thickness and improving pinch grip power in patients with trigger finger. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov//PMC64519/pdf/jpts-31-295.pdf
