Smoking drastically increases your risk for oral cancer, causes more dental plaque, chronic bad breath, and an increased chance of gum disease. But that’s why they invented e-cigarettes, right? Sorry, but no. New research shows vaping is bad for your teeth in much the same way as smoking traditional cigarettes....Continue reading

ORAL HEALTH vs TOTAL HEALTH: KNOW THE CONNECTION Your oral health matters! Oral health and its relationship to our total health underscore the need to educate ourselves about the importance of quality preventive oral health care. ... Research has identified periodontal (gum) disease as a risk factor for heart and lung disease, diabetes, premature, low birth weight babies and a number of other conditions. The 2000 Surgeon General's report, Oral Health in America, has called attention to this connection and states that, if left untreated, poor oral health is a "silent X-factor promoting the onset of life-threatening diseases which are responsible for the deaths of millions of Americans each year." Oral Cancer One of the most serious diseases found in the mouth is oral cancer. Often curable in its early stages, oral cancers are a major cause of death and disfigurement in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. Oral cancer is more common than leukemia, skin melanoma, Hodgkin's disease and cancers of the brain, liver, thyroid gland, stomach, ovaries, and cervix. If caught early, it can be treated successfully; however, if not, it can spread into other parts of the body and become difficult, if not impossible, to treat. Oral cancer screening constitutes one of the most important components of a routine dental hygiene and dental exam. Approximately 80 percent of American adults have some form of periodontal disease and the majority of them do not realize they have it, because in its early stages, it is usually painless. In view of the critical relationship of periodontal disease to overall health, and the staggering number of Americans who develop it, it is essential that the disease be prevented or detected early and treated aggressively.

Tips to ensure and maintain good oral hygiene. * Eat healthy foods and avoid sugary snacks. * Avoid the use of tobacco products. * Rinse your mouth with water after meals ... or chew sugarless gum. * Brush your teeth at least twice a day or after every meal and floss daily. * Protect your teeth with a mouth guard when playing contact sports. * Use a night guard when you tend to grind your teeth during your sleep. * Schedule preventive dental care treatment for yourself and your loved ones. Lisa Durst comes from a dental family. Her father and grandfather were both dentists. It's not surprising that she chose a career in dental hygiene. She says "You could say that dentistry is in my blood." She loves treating patients and meeting their dental needs. She encourages them to keep their dental health for their whole lives. It is obvious that Lisa really enjoys the social aspect of dental hygiene: meeting new people and building a rapport with them over time. They become like family to her! We are so glad that she is a part of our family at Reid Family Dentistry!
