Mindfulness means focusing on the present moment without judgment. It means constantly and gently bringing ourselves back into focusing on the here and now rather than following our thoughts down the spiral. It means intention. Mindfulness is one of the core skills in DBT therapy and is necessary for mastering all the other core skills: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It can be hard trying out therapy for the first or second or even third time and finding yourself getting nowhere. Maybe you felt as if your counselor didn't get you or maybe you didn't think the approach they used made much of a difference. It's easy to get discouraged. One thing to keep in mind: DON'T GIVE UP! Therapists have many different personalities and approaches and may be direct or indirect and so on. The right therapist is out there for you. If you find that you don't click with your therapist after about 5 sessions, find another one.
