Today marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau or the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. But this day is not only about a genocide ag...ainst a people, it's more than that. Around 80 years ago, many of our Brethren perished in Nazi concentration camps for their choice to be Freemasons and carry on the legacy of our Fraternity, and their nationality, ethnicity or religion did not matter to that criminal regime. We invite you to keep a moment of silence for all the Masons who died or suffered because of Fascism, Nazism or any other totalitarian regime. Let us celebrate their lives and always keep them in our memories. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #Freemasons #neverforgotten #forgetmenot #neveragain

Today in Masonic History we discuss the Cornucopia. The Cornucopia is a symbol of plenty and abundance. The Cornucopia as a symbol of abundance and of nourishment stretches back to Classical Antiquity (a period of time in the Mediterranean generally encompassing the Greco-Roman period). It is most commonly associated with Zeus, King of the Greek gods. When Zeus was born he was hidden away by his mother to prevent Kronos, his father, from eating him, as he did Zeus' siblings. ...Kronos in doing this tried to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy stating one of his children was destined to destroy him. While Zeus was in hiding from his father, he was fed and cared for by various divine attendants including Amalthea (the Nourishing Goddess) who appeared in the form of a goat. The legend states Zeus accidentally broke off one her horns. Later he gave the horn to the world of man as it provided whatever was desired. In other myths of the period, Heracles (the Roman equivalent of Hercules) broke off the horn of a river god, with similar results as Amalthea's horn. The Cornucopia is associated with a variety of gods and goddesses around the Mediterranean. The Greek God the Cornucopia is associated with, probably most fascinates Freemasons, Pluto, god of the underworld. This version of the God of the Underworld, formerly Hades, was taught in the Mystery Religions, sometimes called the sacred mysteries or mysteries. The Mystery Religions of the Greco-Roman world were religious schools only for the initiates. At least one source on the Mystery Religions states "The main characterization of this religion is the secrecy associated with the particulars of the initiation and the ritual practice, which may not be revealed to outsiders." Pluto, probably to show the difference between him and Hades, is often depicted holding a Cornucopia in contrast to Hades who is depicted holding a drinking horn. Pluto was the giver of agriculture, mineral and spiritual wealth. In modern times the Cornucopia has been adopted the world over as a symbol of prosperity and abundance. This is especially true in North America. In Canada an annual festival called Cornucopia is held. In several Central and South American countries the Cornucopia is depicted on their coat of arms. In the United States several states have the Cornucopia on their state flags and on state seals. It is most closely tied in the United States with the Thanksgiving Holiday. For Freemasons the Cornucopia is most commonly known as the symbol for the stewards who are stationed in the Masonic South. The Masonic South is tied with nourishment of the brothers. Often one of the duties of the stewards is to help with meal preparation and other times when nourishment is provided to the members of the lodge.

Today in Masonic History we present Banquet Night by Rudyard Kipling. "Once in so often," King Solomon said, Watching his quarrymen drill the stone, "We will club our garlic and wine and bread,... And banquet together beneath my Throne. And all the Brethren shall come to that mess As Fellow-Craftsmen-no more and no less. "Send a swift shallop to Hiram of Tyre, Felling and floating our beautifull trees, Say that the Brethren and I desire Talk with our Brethren who use the seas. And we shall be happy to meet them at mess As Fellow-Craftsmen- no more and no less. "Carry this massage to Hiram Abif- Excellent Master of forge and mine:- I and the Brethren would like it if He and the Brethren will come to dine (Garments from Bozrah or morning-dress) As Fellow-Craftsmen- no more and no less. "God gave the Hyssop and Cedar their place- Also the Bramble, the Fig and the Thorn- But that is no reason to black a man's face Because he is not what he hasn't been born. And, as touching the Temple, I hold and profess We are Fellow-Craftsmen-no more and no less". So it was ordered and so it was done, And the hewers of wood and the Masons of Mark, With foc'sle hands of the Sidon run And Navy Lords from the Royal Ark, Came and sat down and were merry at mess As Fellow-Craftsmen- no more and no less. The Quarries are hotter than Hiram's forge, No one is safe from the dog-whip's reach, It's mostly snowing up Lebanon's gorge, And it's always blowing off Joppa beach; But once in so often, the messanger brings Solomon's mandate:"Forget these things! Brother to Beggars and Fellow to Kings, Companion of Princes-forget these things! Fellow-Craftman, forget these things!"

Today in Masonic History we present The Thousandth Man by Rudyard Kipling. One man in a thousand, Solomon says, Will stick more close than a brother. And it's worth while seeking him half your days... If you find him before the other. Nine hundred and ninety-nine depend On what the world sees in you, But the Thousandth man will stand your friend With the whole round world agin' you. 'Tis neither promise nor prayer nor show Will settle the finding for 'ee. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of 'em go By your looks, or your acts, or your glory. But if he finds you and you find him. The rest of the world don't matter; For the Thousandth Man will sink or swim With you in any water. You can use his purse with no more talk Than he uses yours for his spendings, And laugh and meet in your daily walk As though there had been no lendings. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of 'em call For silver and gold in their dealings; But the Thousandth Man he's worth 'em all, Because you can show him your feelings. His wrong's your wrong, and his right's your right, In season or out of season. Stand up and back it in all men's sight -- With that for your only reason! Nine hundred and ninety-nine can't bide The shame or mocking or laughter, But the Thousandth Man will stand by your side To the gallows-foot -- and after!

Today in Masonic History we discuss the Comacine masters. The Comacine masters was a guild which existed in Lombardy, Italy. The Comacine masters or magistri comacini is believed to have originated in or around Isola Comacina in Lake Como in Italy. There are some that interpret the name Comacine to mean "masons" since the Comacine masters are largely known through their stone works around Europe. Examples of the Comacine masters are believed to be found as far away as Sweden ...and Syria. The Comacine masters were first and foremost a guild which protected it's members. It has been theorized that the Comacine masters came into existence when the Roman secrets of masonry construction were passed on by the mason brotherhood. It should be noted that this is not a reference to Freemasonry, but to operative masons who worked in the Roman style. In each city or town a confraternity, a group of lay people who were formed generally to do Christian works, formed. It was made up of men only and consisted of free men, freedmen and slaves all working together like a microscasm of the community in which they were formed. Each confraternity had it's own religious orientation and was not always stone masons, carpenters and other skilled labor had their own confraternites. Other more common events involving the Comacine masters included, fraternal banqueting and the eventual support of their widows throughout the Roman Empire. With the above description it makes sense modern Freemasons claimed a connection with the Comacine masters. There is no known direct link between modern Freemasonry and the Comacine masters. The first earliest known mention of the Comacine masters was in the edict of 643. The portion of the edict of 643 that mentions the Comacine masters simply talks about liability if a house which has been built collapes. Regardless of any real or imagined connection between the Comacine masters and Freemasonry, the goals of the two organizations seem to be very compatible.

Today in Masonic History we present The Master's Apron by Robert Burns. There's many a badge that's very grand; With ribbon, lace and tape on; Let kings and princes wear them all,... Give me the Master's apron! The honest craftsman's apron, The jolly Freemason's apron, Be he at home or roam afar, Before his touch fall bolt and bar, The gates of fortune fly ajar, When he but wears the apron! For wealth and honor, pride and power are crumbling stones to base on; Eternity should rule the hour, and every worthy Mason! Each Free Accepted Mason, Each Ancient Crafted Mason. Then Brethren, let a wholesome song Arouse your friendly ranks along. Good wives and children blithely sing To the ancient badge with the apron string That is worn by the Master Masons!

Today in Masonic History we present The Palace by Rudyard Kipling When I was a King and a Mason- A Master Proven and skilled- I cleared me ground for a Palace... Such as a King should build. I decreed and dug down to my levels; Presently, under the silt, I came on the wreck of a Palace, Such as a King had built. There was no worth in the fashion- There was no wit in the plan; Hither and thither, aimless, The ruined footings ran. Masonry, brute, mishandled, But carven on every stone, "After me cometh a Builder; Tell him I, too, have known." Swift to my use in my trenches, Where my well-planned groundworks grew, I tumbled his quoins and his ashlars, And cut and rest them anew. Lime I milled of his marbles; Burned it, slacked it, and spread; Taking and leaving at pleasure The gifts of the humble dead. Yet I despised not nor gloried, Yet, as we wrenched them apart, I read in the razed foundation The heart of that builder's heart. As he has risen and pleaded, So did I understand The form of the dream he had followed In the face of the thing he had planned. When I was a King and a Mason, In the open noon of my pride, They sent me a Word from the Darkness - They whispered and called me aside. They said, "The end is forbidden." They said, "Thy use is fulfilled. Thy Palace shall stand as that other's - The spoil of a King who shall build." I called my men from my trenches, My quarries, my wharves, and my sheers; All I had wrought I abandoned To the faith of the faithless years. Only I cut on the timber - Only I carved on the stone: "After me cometh a Builder; Tell him I, too, have known."

Today in Masonic History we Jubal and Tubal Cain by Rudyard Kipling. Jubal and Tubal Cain! Jubal sang of the new found sea,... And the love that its waves divide: But Tubal hollowed a fallen tree And passed to the farther side. Black - black as the hurricane wrack, Salt as the under main Bitter and cold is the hate they hold - Jubal and Tubal Cain! Jubal sang of the golden years, When wars and wounds shall cease; But Tubal fashioned the hand-flung spears And showed his neighbors peace. New - new as the nine-point-two, Older than Lamech's slain Roaring and loud is the feud avowed, 'twixt Jubal and Tubal Cain! Jubal sang of the cliffs that bar And the peaks that none may crown But Tubal clambered by jut and scar, And there he builded a town. High - high as the snowsheds lie, Low as the culverts drain Wherever they be, they can never agree- Jubal and Tubal Cain!
