It was heartbreaking. We waited and waited and no one ever came.

Susan and Dennis Braley were willing to adopt children whose parents were deceased or had encountered difficult situations. Over the past 20 years, the couple became foster parents to a total of 309 children and then adoptive parents to seven of them.

When her husband died, her friends stepped in and saved Christmas. So now she’s paying it forward by helping other families who are grieving.

Spencer Smith was an outgoing teen who loved to make people smile, spending time with friends, and -- most of all -- football. When coronavirus closed schools and then canceled games, he struggled, one of a growing number of children researchers say are suffering mentally in the pandemic.
