We are proud to introduce the Sacred Harp Museum's 2019 Resident Intern, Sarah Ward. Sarah, who begins her month-long internship next week, attends Indiana University where she is pursuing a Masters of Arts in Musicology from the Jacobs School of Music and a Master of Library Science from the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. Sarah has been a Sacred Harp singer since 2006, singing mostly in the Atlanta area before joining the Bloomington Sacred Harp sin...gers after her 2017 move to attend graduate school. Her research has centered on American music, focusing on William Billings and other early New England tunesmiths. During her internship, Sarah will focus on enhancing access to the Sacred Harp Museum's archival collections, which include the writing and music of prominent singers and composers such as Ruth Denson Edwards, Alfred Marcus Cagle, and Hugh McGraw. Sarah brings considerable experience: she served as assistant to the rare books cataloger at Emory University's Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library, library assistant at the Archives of Traditional Music at Indiana University, image and metadata specialist on a CLIR grant-funded hidden collection digitizing captured Russian military maps, and a special projects intern in cultural sustainability at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage where she worked on metadata development, user experience design, and digital curation. Additional relevant library positions include: Visiting Subject Liaison in Anthropology, Sociology, and Folklore at Indiana University, and the library coordinator for the Marian K. Heilbrun Music & Media Library at Emory. Sarah also brings a wide range of relevant technical skills to the Sacred Harp Museum internship, complementing her extensive experience. Join us in welcoming Sarah to the Sacred Harp Museum and thanking her for taking on this responsibility!

Charlene Wallace was a superb alto, a stalwart supporter of singings in her community, and a continual promoter of Sacred Harp. She was also the moving force behind the Sacred Harp Museum, building the collection, maintaining the facility, and creating an unparalleled resource in the meticulous scrapbooks that she compiled over decades. Her deep love for Sacred Harp singing and her sincere desire to preserve its heritage will always inspire all of us who have been so lucky to learn from the collection that she founded.
