Tonight and tomorrow, the Orthodox Church in America commemorates all the Saints, known and unknown, that have shone forth in these lands. Many of them are relatively modern, living and working in places that we live and work in today. May their accessible examples inspire us to live godly lives like they did, and shine forth with love for Christ and love for our neighbors. From Vespers this evening, Rejoice, O mountains of Pennsylvania, Leap for joy, O waters of the Grea...t Lakes, Rise up, O fertile plains of Canada, for the elect of Christ who dwelt in you are glorified, men and women who left their homes for a new land. With faith, hope and patience as their armor, they courageously fought the good fight. Comforted by the beauty of the Orthodox Faith, they labored in mines and mills, they tilled the land, they braved the challenges of the great cities, enduring many hardships and sufferings. Never failing to worship God in spirit and truth, and unyielding in devotion to His most pure Mother, they erected many temples to His glory. Come, O assembly of the Orthodox, and with love let us praise the holy women, men and children, those known to us and those known only to God, and let us cry out to them: Rejoice, All Saints of North America, and pray to God for us. Icon by the hand of Rev. Father Jerome Sanderson of Christ the Savior in Nashville, Indiana. It is available at Uncut Mountain Supply. See more

Today is the Feast of Pentecost, and we resume singing, O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere and fillest all things; Treasury of Blessings, and Giver of Life - come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One. Troparion Tone 8 Blessed are You O Christ Our God / You have revealed the fishermen as most wise / by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit / through them You drew the world into Your net... / O Lover of Man, Glory to You! Kontakion Tone 8 When the most High came down and confused the tongues, / He divided the nations; / but when he distributed the tongues of fire / He called all to unity. / Therefore, with one voice, we glorify the All-holy Spirit! . . . For as of old on the fiftieth day after the Sacrifice of the Lamb, the Law was given on Mount Sinai to the Hebrew people, now delivered from the Egyptians, so, after the Passion of Christ, in which the True Lamb of God was slain, on the fiftieth day after His Resurrection, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and upon the people who believed (Acts ii.3); so that an earnest Christian might know beyond any uncertainty, that the sacred rites of the Old Testament had served as foundations for the Gospel, and that by this same Spirit was the Second Covenant laid down, by Whom the first had been established. + St. Leo the Great, The Work of the Holy Spirit

Repost from @sttikhonorthodox Blessed Feast of St Maximus ... Today we also celebrate our Venerable Father Maximus the Confessor. The divine Maximus, who was from Constantinople, sprang from an illustrious family. He was a lover of wisdom and an eminent theologian. At first, he was the chief private secretary of the Emperor Heraclius and his grandson Constans. When the Monothelite heresy became predominant in the royal court, out of hatred for this error the Saint departed... for the Monastery at Chrysopolis (Scutari), of which he later became the abbot. When Constans tried to constrain him either to accept the Monothelite teaching, or to stop speaking and writing against it - neither of which the Saint accepted to do - his tongue was uprooted and his right hand was cut off, and he was sent into exile where he reposed in 662. At the time only he and his few disciples were Orthodox in the East. May he intercede for us always + Source: https://www.goarch.org/chapel/saints?contentid=396 #Repost @thesynaxarium @basilica.ro
