Building: I never played on a winning High School football team! I played on a building football program. My Sophomore football was a train wreck. The entire sports program was in disarray and there wasn’t a lot of hope. However, the leaders of our school had something good planned. They hired Coach Ken Cannon as our new head Coach/Athletic Director. He had a long history as a winner and all of a sudden there was light at the end of the tunnel. Nobody mentioned how lo...ng the tunnel was!! My Junior year we were 1-9-1. That’s right, one win, 9 losses and one tie. No matter how bad it got Coach continued to speak about winning! The night we tied I felt like we won! That one win felt like like I had won the Heisman! Lol Then came my senior season. 2-a-days in 100+ temperatures for the whole month of August! During our Senior year we finished 3-6-1. 3 wins, 6 losses, and one tie! Of the 6 losses - five of the losses were by less than a touchdown! Teams that had blasted us one year earlier were now having to fight like cats and dogs to barely beat us. I left my Senior year feeling better, but Coach wasn’t done yet. One year after I finished high school, Coach took the team to the State Championship and lost the game by one point after we fumbled a punt on the five yard line in pouring rain. One year later.. we won the State! Year 1- 1 win Year 2- 3 wins Year 3- 9 wins and #2 in the State Year 4- State Champions!! Sometimes you gotta learn to lose before you can learn to win. We believe Coach Clarke will bring the ring to SEHS!! And we’re proud to be Mustangs!!! See more

In 1988 I came to Effingham to help my cousin run Subs and Pizzas of Rincon. We had one in Springfield too! There wasn’t a lot of competition back then but we sold a lot of pizza. Customers would call in and give delivery instructions to turn left at the oak tree and then turn right at the cow. I kid you not!! It was a different era. Now we have GPS and satellites to track every pizza. But we still have cows! I never intended to get into the pizza business. But I’m glad I... did, Effingham is a great place to live and raise your family! I know everyone and I’ve met every dog personally!! God bless you all!!
