Repost @badassmotherbirther . The umbilical cord is a conduit between the developing baby and the placenta. ... The umbilical contains: 2arteries(umbilical arteries) 1vein(umbilical vein) These are are buried within Wharton's jelly that all beautifully form the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord develops from the yolk sac and allantois. It forms by the 5th week of pregnancy, replacing the yolk sac as the source of nutrients for the baby. The cord is not directly connected to the parent’s circulatory system, but instead joins the placenta, which transfers materials to and from the parental blood without allowing direct mixing. The umbilical cord in a full term baby is usually about 20 inches long and about 0.75 inches in diameter. The blood flow through the umbilical cord is approximately 35 ml / min at 20 weeks, and 240 ml / min at 40 weeks of gestation. Adapted to the weight of the baby, this corresponds to 115 ml / min / kg at 20 weeks and 64 ml / min / kg at 40 weeks. The umbilical cord enters the baby via the abdomen, at the point which (after separation) will become the baby’s belly button. Within the baby, the umbilical vein continues towards the transverse fissure of the liver, where it splits into two. One of these branches joins with the hepatic portal vein (connecting to its left branch), which carries blood into the liver. The second branch (known as the ductus venosus) bypasses the liver and flows into the inferior vena cava, which carries blood towards the heart. The two umbilical arteries branch from the internal iliac arteries, and pass on either side of the urinary bladder into the umbilical cord, completing the circuit back to the placenta. The umbilical vein supplies the baby with oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta. The baby’s heart pumps deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood through the umbilical arteries and back to the placenta. THE UMBILICAL CORD IS PERFECTLY DESIGNED TO MAKE A GORGEOUS EXCHANGE OF GOOD THINGS COMING IN AND BAD THINGS GOING OUT. Words: @badassmotherbirther PhotoCred: @eletfababapraxis

Repost @mamastefit Upright laboring and pushing positions tend to result in better birth outcomes, mainly due to increased movement and use of gravity. But, not every movement or position opens the pelvis in the same way! Deep squats tend to support helping baby engage, or enter the pelvis, but would close the outlet (bottom of pelvis) which may not be optimal for pushing.... And a high squat, where the hips are pushed back w a neutral spine, and the knees knock in, would open the bottom of the pelvis more. This would be more optimal for pushing! Tuesday, December 1st at 730pm EST, we have our weekly webinar series and this week is Pushing: Understanding the Second Stage of Labor with Gina! Recording will be available for those who register, but can’t make it to the live webinar! Sign up at MamasteFit.com/webinars or at the link in our bio/stories!

This is important. Tag your pelvic floor therapist! Repost @the.vagina.whisperer I once worked for a hospital and when I asked if we could start a class educating pregnant women on pelvic floor therapy and postpartum issues they may experience, the response was: We don't want to scare them. That. That was the response. The decision was made for them - to let mothers go uninformed and provide very little education or information on postpartum recovery. Instead let them ...navigate it on their own, while they heal, try to breastfeed, keep a tiny human alive, and potentially pee their pants. Thanks - not scary at all. There is a better way. Educating women on their bodies is not telling them you are GOING to have these problems, it's informing them of what MAY happen, what to look out for, and where to seek help if an issue arises. It's empowering them. It's making them the drivers in their health instead of the passengers. It's giving them the choice to make decisions for the body, the one they will be in after the baby is born. It's called healthCARE. It's been incredible to see the field of Pelvic Floor Therapy grow to start proactively preparing women for birth and postpartum recovery. To give women simple tools on how to pee, poop, and birth a baby. To let them know pelvic floor issues are common after birth and they are not alone. And to let them there there is help for that. I dream of the day Pelvic PT is standard care for every woman. When mothers get as many check-ups as babies after birth. And when every woman receives pelvic floor physical therapy postpartum. So let's keep going y'all. The mothers of our country deserve better. . . . #thevaginawhisperer #postpartum #mentalhealth #pelvichealth #pelvicfloorpt #neworleans

This is a great tip-learning to read your baby’s cues can make a huge difference for everyone during your postpartum period Repost @mommy.labornurse Remember this pic? Do you ever wonder if your baby is getting enough during feedings? Is she still hungry...or is she full? ... I used to go CRAZY wondering these same questions...(seriously, I was SO obsessed with his feedings and giving him enough) This is actually a very effective tip I learned from my own lactation consultant by going to her breastfeeding support groups! Use baby’s hands as a guide to determine how hungry they are! Their hands are almost like a gas gauge! Next time you feed your little one, notice how her hands are tighter at the beginning of a feed, and sloooowly start to loosen. By the end of the feed, baby’s hands should be nice and relaxed! Of course, all babies are different too! Your baby may not ever relax his hands completely-some babies (especially dependent on age) always have their little hands in fists. But his shoulders, arms, legs etc. may look a little more relaxed at the end of a feeding! Moral of this post-watch baby during feedings and their cues! If they are satisfied (and that means not OVER-full too!) they should be relaxed-and this most often is evident in those tiny little hands of theirs! At your next feeding, take note, did this happen with your baby? Report back!! See more

Repost @nz_birthstories ‘Whenua’ At the beginning of your world, I was part of you. Made of the same luminous fabric, flesh of your flesh, of our father and mother’s being.... As we grew, we were separated but united. I fed you, breathed for you, became a pathway for the flushing currents of our mother’s blood. As you slept, I was your cradle and your guard, when you awoke I was your companion. Together for that last day I leashed you the very limits of our linking line before releasing you to the touch of others- lovers, yes- but surely none will hold you as nearly, as sweetly or as softly as I did. As our connection was severed you wept for me once, then were gone. Carry me deep in your heart as you bury me in the soil of our home, for I am the earth of your making.
