Savannah River Chapter of Federally Employed Women 02.02.2021

Words from our President La Kesha Woodcox. Can you believe it? Spring is already here and the weather is finally beginning to feel fantastic. This is that time of the year when we start... feeling a need to get out and enjoy the resurgence of our green lawns; the budding of trees; the beauti ful colors and fragrances of new flowers; and the melodic sounds of birds and beesall signaling the birth of spring. Our members thought it was also a good time to do some spring cleaning of our chapter. So, about 18 members gave up a Saturday to meet at my home with the idea of Making an Impact for our chapter. We discussed ways to reshape, regroup, and redefine some of our practices and to strengthen our commitment to FEW. It was a powerful day! When done, we had agreed to change the Executive Board conference calls to the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Our monthly meetings will remain on the 2nd Thursday. We also made plans to have several fun events, try different ideas for the attraction of new members, and discussed ways to reclaim former members. We decided to use social media and special apps as an additional way to distribute chapter information. This was a great start at Making an Impact and I truly thank the members that came and contributed ideas. I strongly encourage those of you that were not involved in this session, to commit, this year, to help us make a POWERFUL impact in our chapter! See more

WOMEN VETERANS IN STEM Women veterans bring many strengths to the civilian workforce, such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, as well as resilience and persistence. Women veterans are nearly twice as likely to be in a STEM related occupation than non-veteran women. While there has been an increase in the number of programs and the availability of support services for veterans, and for women, there is currently no structure or system to align these efforts to... serve women veterans. The Education Development Center (EDC) was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to examine how to leverage the unique strengths of women veterans to address barriers and strengthen the pipeline from service to STEM for women veterans for future engagement in the STEM workforce by hosting a virtual convening on March 2-5, 2021. Connie Coleman-Lacadie, National Vice President for Policy & Planning, serves as the representative for FEW on the Women Veterans in STEM Advisory Board to provide content from FEW to assist the group of researchers with the EDC in the development of several white papers on subjects of Women Veterans, Transition Services, STEM Workforce, STEM Education and Health & Well-being. Through this partnership, we announce a FREE virtual registration to "Strengthening the Pipeline from Service to STEM" March 2-5, 2021. Register here to attend. The schedule and topics for the convening are: March 2, 2021 1:004:30 EST: The Future of Women Vets in STEM Plenary Participants will be provided an overview of the project and hear from nationally recognized women veterans on their experiences transitioning from service to the workforce in Ted Talk-style keynote addresses. March 3, 2021, 1:003:00 EST: Transition Services and STEM Workforce Development (concurrent) Work Group Discussions and Recommendations Participants will have the opportunity to provide and prioritize recommendations to address barriers and leverage strengths in one of these focus areas. March 4, 2021, 1:003:00 EST: STEM Education and Health and Well-being (concurrent) Work Group Discussions and Recommendations Participants will have the opportunity to provide and prioritize recommendations to address barriers and leverage strengths in one of these focus areas. March 5, 2021, 1:004:00 EST: Conference Closing - Work Group Summaries, Discussant Panels, and Next Steps A panel of employers and federal agencies will discuss recommendations from the previous days. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the recommendations. For additional information, contact FEW's VP of Policy and Planning at [email protected]. Please share with your colleagues, friends, and veterans. Karen M. Rainey National President Federally Employed Women
