Big Misconception Quite often, we get phone calls from clients who are looking at or have bought medical plans on the internet. Most commonly, we hear we were able to get a plan from Aetna or Cigna. However, the fact is, Aetna and Cigna do not sell individual major medical plans in the middle Georgia area, nor anywhere else in Georgia. In general, plans found on the internet are limited benefit plans that use the networks for Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, United Healthcare and o...thers, which means you can go to a provider that has a contract with these carriers. However, in the case of these internet plans, the actual carrier is most often an unknown or little-known company. Major medical options are currently very few, which makes these options seem more attractive. Internet plans are most often meant for short term coverage and in no way provide major medical protection. They are often called indemnity plans, which look good on paper but will likely disappoint when needed. Coverage is very limited with lengthy waiting periods and companies often disappear or change names unexpectedly. The plans are loaded with exclusions and have caps on what they pay for covered services. The carriers can be difficult to reach and are usually very vague with explanations of coverage. If interested in buying one of these policies, be careful. Read the fine print and/or have an agent review the policy. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) did away with screening pre-existing conditions as part of the application process. If any insurance company requires a health questionnaire, the plan is not major medical. For a major medical plan, your rate is determined by your age, zip code, and tobacco status. The open enrollment period for major medical insurance is November 1 December 15. We will be glad to review your current coverage and determine if you need to stay where you are or explore other options.
