It’s #petsandpagesmonday, and we’re at the Carroll County Animal Shelter with an adoptable pet! Meet Salvador! Salvador is a big and gentle ginger boy of 6 years that the animal shelter describes as possessing a natural dignity and presence that you can feel when you visit his cage. The second I opened his cage this morning, Salvador was up and ready for pets, cuddles, and affectionthis cat is sure to win your heart. Salvador is also FIV+. Over a million healthy cats ar...e euthanized each year simply because they have FIV. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is not transmissible to humans, and FIV positive cats can make positively wonderful pets, can safely and happily share a home with FIV negative kitties, and can live long and happy lives when given the chance! For more facts on FIV, follow @fivcatrescue! Megan is spellbound by her advance reading copy (ARC) of The Last Graduate, the sequel to A Deadly Education and the next installment of the Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik! At the Scholomance--think Hogwarts in Hell--graduation is survival, and survival depends on the deaths of your fellow students. El, short for Galadriel, was born with an innate talent for extraordinary evil that she’s doing her best to avoid, along with Orion Lake, the school’s resident golden boy, saving lives whether they like it or notand El does not. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Harry Potter meets Hunger Games, with a spellbinding, unputdownable humor, horror, and magic all its own! Just in time for tonight’s rare All Hallows’ Eve full moon! Published in 1885, this collection of lunar lore and legend collects many esoteric myths, spiritual traditions, and superstitions about the moon from around the globe. Rev. Timothy Harley divides his lunar explorations into four fields of study. First, Harley conducts a "mythological and mirthsome" investigation of moon-spots, including the Man in the Moon, the Woman in the Moon, the Toad in the Moon, and the Hare... in the Moon, illustrated in frontispiece and seven illustrations. The second subject of study is moon-worship, "designed to show that anthropomorphism and sexuality have been the principal factors in that idolatry which in all ages has paid homage to the hosts of heaven," paying tribute to the moon deities of spiritual traditons the world over. The third section, on moon-superstitions, spans beliefs about the role of the moon in witchcraft and divination to accounts of the terror and awe lunar eclipses have inspired throughout history and the many stories peoples the world over have told to explain the phenomena. In conclusion, Harley poses the question of moon-inhabitation from spiritual, philosophical, and scientific viewpoints. This 1885 first printing is halfbound in dark calfskin, with marbled paper over boards, matching marbled endpapers, and all edges marbled as well, a bewitching binding for this collection of curious notions about the earth's closest companion and the ruler of the night sky. $225 Learn more here: https://www.undergroundbooks.net//rev-timothy-ha/moon-lore

ABOUT Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide: As featured on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide is a do-it-herself guide to auto maintenance, roadside emergencies, and the real scoop on how women can get honest car service at the garage, from engineer turned auto mechanic Patrice Banks. So many women feel powerless, nervous, or embarrassed when taking our cars in for a repair, and yet we outnumber men both as drivers and as customers at auto repair shops. The time has come for us to grab the wheel and finally take control of our cars. Filled with easy-to-follow illustrations and instructions, great tips, and lifesaving rules of thumb, The Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide will help take away the confusion and mystery surrounding cars, teach women what they need to know about how their cars work, and what they need to do to keep them running smoothly. Patrice Banks was once a self-professed auto airhead who was clueless about car maintenance, yet convinced that mechanics were taking advantage of her. Now she’s an auto pro devoted to empowering women to learn basic car repairs and knowing what to do in an emergency. So whether you get a flat tire when you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere, your car overheats, or a mysterious dashboard light suddenly starts blinking, help is just a reach-in-the-glove-box away. If you’ve ever wanted a whole bookstore all to yourself, you’re going to want to read this announcement! After much consideration, we’re excited to share that Underground Books will soon be open by private shopping appointment. These appointments are available Sunday through Friday, 11-3pm for the time being. We are aware that these may not be the most convenient times for many of our readers. We plan on expanding these hours if all goes well. You can also contact us directly... to arrange an appointment outside the available hours. Appointments last for up to 45 minutes and are limited to 4 people, with masks over mouths and noses required 100% of the time for all readers over 2 years of age. If, for whatever reason, these appointments don’t work for you, we are happy to accommodate you through online ordering at www.bookshop.org/shop/undergroundbooks or message us privately or call the shop for curbside pick-up, shipping, or free contactless porch delivery within Carrollton city limits. We are so humbled by the number of people who have reached out or stopped us at the grocery store to ask when Underground Books would open again. We deeply appreciate your support and your patience. Here at Underground Books, we take the health of our family, our booksellers, and our community very seriously. These appointments are a cautious first step and require everyone to show care for others and respect for safety requirements to be successful. The COVID-19 pandemic is just as, if not more, serious and life-endangering than it was when we closed to the public in March. Please help us keep our neighbors, loved ones, and fellow readers safe by wearing a mask and social distancing as much as possible. We look forward to seeing you soon! In 1901 a series of attempted lynchings in Carroll County and across the South prompted Mark Twain to write an essay denouncing the rise of mob violence. Thanks to Georgia Backroads Magazine for granting us permission to share the story of this painful episode in our local history, as we continue to grapple with our region's complex legacy of racism and hate. This #bookfacefriday brings two of our favorite definitions to mind, one for the word book and one for hope. Underground readers will already know the first, as this Neil Gaiman quote is proudly scrawled three bookcases in the shop: A book is a dream you hold in your hand. And Emily Dickinson once defined the latter term as such: ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul... All that to say we sure hope this gloomy Friday finds you warm and well and with a book in hand. #undergroundbookfaces

We have a few more FREE copies of this audiobook to give away! Just message us and let us know that you want a free copy and we'll send you the instructions! Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You is a remix of the National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning. Adapted especially for young people, Stamped reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

"It was certainly a queer house. Even through the blinding storm they could distinguish its eccentric outlines..." Welcome to the Jack O' Lantern, a "sepulchral mansion" full of "unexpected doors, queer, winding passages, and lonely, untenanted rooms." This turn-of-the-century novel stars the newlyweds Harlan and Dorothy Carr, who have just inherited a grand country estate from an estranged Uncle Ebeneezer. What they end up inheriting is a haunted house that brings all of the...ir estranged and just plain strange relatives out of the woodwork, along with a series of ghostly events, a cat that may have arisen from the dead, and an elaborate plan for revenge orchestrated from beyond the grave. Bound in a ghost-pale and gilt-decorated binding designed by the great Art Nouveau book designer Margaret Armstrong, this 1907 printing of Myrtle Reed's hilarious and haunting novel is a real treat for Halloween! $75 Buy it from our spooky booth at the Getman’s Virtual Book & Paper Fair: https://getmansvirtual.com/underground-books-llc
