This summer, the UHP team has been researching known and possible surviving enslaved African American workers from the Thomas Bonner plantation (c.1833 or 1843 through 1865), lands which became the campus for the Fourth District A&M School in 1906. Yesterday, University History Coordinator Kaitlin Costley and Center Assistant Director Keri Adams stepped back in time by exploring Foster’s Store on Maple Street. L.R. Foster converted this former country store into off-campus housing in 1966 for a rate of $50 a month per person. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, West Georgia College students congregated here where they discussed contemporary events and politics and occasionally partied. Later, it became storage for Et...hel Foster Marks and Reverend J. T. Marks. As you can see, the presence of its former tenants and the Fosters lingers. From furniture and clothing to books, photographs, and architectural remnants, the space tells the story of a bygone time of West Georgia College, the students, and its connection to the community. This fall, Foster’s Store will be featured in an exhibit regarding the counterculture on UWG’s campus during the 1960s and 1970s. So, stay tuned for more details. Special thanks to Pastor Kevin Jarrett of Southern Hills Christian Church for giving us access to the property! #wentwestmadehistory #uwgcounterculture #uwghistoryproject #publichistory #fieldwork #uwgpublichistory #uwguhp See more
