We know PSA's are not very exciting posts, but this is something that not everyone might know and could save your pet's life. Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.... Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog. I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was. So I took him to emergency vet. It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out. The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing. Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets. It feels like an eternity since the rumors were swirling about everywhere that grain-free dog foods cause DCM or dilated cardiomyopathy. Several big name pet food companies profited handsomely from this misinformation. At Wags to Whiskers, we tried to explain to our customers that what the FDA posted was not a valid study that proved this and to follow the money. So to all of our dear and valued customers, what follows in the link is the valid study refuting what pet owne...rs have erroneously been told over the last year and a half. Please share. A group of veterinarians, veterinary cardiologists, and animal nutritionists from BSM Partners, a pet care research and consulting firm, published their first study on dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. Following an examination of more than 150 studies, the authors found no definitive relationship between grain-free and legume-rich diets, and DCM. Additionally, the FDA’s reported cases of DCM include incomplete information, making it impossible to draw any sound conclusions from this data. The peer-reviewed article, which appears in the Journal of Animal Science, is an exhaustive literature review regarding the causes of DCM, and the first research resulting from BSM Partners’ long-term DCM research effort. https://academic.oup.com/jas/article/98/6/skaa155/5857674

The positive effect of an MCT-enriched diet was also highlighted in a recent study comparing an MCT oil dietary supplement to a contr...ol oil (olive oil) in 28 dogs with IE being treated with standard ASD(s). Overall seizure and seizure-day frequency were significantly lower in dogs that had the MCT oil dietary supplement added to their routine diet compared to dogs that had the control oil added to their food. Medium chain fatty acids are efficient in crossing the blood-brain barrier, unlike long chain fatty acids, and can be directly oxidised in the brain. In rats ketogenic diets may increase mitochondrial function and brain energy reserves. In addition, an MCT diet has been shown to dramatically increase mitochondrial function in dogs, and also to increase metabolic synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and their uptake in the canine brain tissue. Interestingly, MCTs and their downstream metabolites are thought to have multiple affects in the brain. Recent studies have revealed that decanoic acids (C10) can act as a non-competitive AMPA receptor antagonist resulting in direct inhibition of excitatory neurotransmission, and thus exerts an anticonvulsant effect. Furthermore, C10 on its own might be able to modulate mitochondrial proliferation via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma receptor.
