They've given us countless tours of their facilities, let our kids play and feed the animals, helped us find our pup (the diva known as Scout), along with helping a ton of our friends and family members find their perfect rescue animal. We're back to our regular hours beginning this week, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Our current hours are: Monday through Thursday 10-5... Friday and Saturday 10-8 and Sunday 11-6 As a reminder, we keep all of our hours current on our Google Business listing, Facebook About page, website, TripAdvisor, Yelp, Apple Maps and a few other places. You're always welcome to ask, just know that we're a bit obsessive about updating all the online spots with real time hours.

We got a second round last night after we went to sleep and it is an absolutely beautiful thing to wake up to this morning. The temps got down in the teens though so there is ICE everywhere after a day of rain. Be safe out there and stay off the roads so the road crews can work their magic.

It’s going to be a beautiful crisp day with temperatures in the high 50s. Even better, we’re back open after not having power or internet for 2 days. We’ve received a lot of messages asking but yes, most of the other shops and restaurants in the area are opening back up today. And after being closed for a couple of days, I’m sure most of them wouldn’t mind if you stopped by and did some early Christmas shopping or grabbed some lunch with them. Keep in mind that Black Rock Mo...untain and Tallulah Gorge State Park don’t have power yet and some USFS trails are still closed from the rain. Like we mentioned a few weeks ago in the PSA, make sure you plan ahead and check out the website for the park or trail or you’re visiting to get the latest updates and details. We're back open! Not quite sure we'll stay open regular hours until 8:00pm tonight as we've got a few staffing issues. But we'll be here until at least 6:00pm. A little throwback to downtown last December. But the rumor is we might get a little bit of snow on Christmas this year. Anybody else rooting for a White Christmas? We are still without power, internet and cell service at our homes and our shop downtown and it seems about 90% of the county still is as well. We were closed all day yesterday and as of right now, we’ll be closed again this morning. We have received no updates or estimate on when we will have these services returned, so we will be closed again today until we get it back. We're officially past our shipping deadline but that doesn't mean we can't help you with any last minute gift giving ideas at our shop in Clayton! As we continue to count down and shout out the people who have been instrumental to our small business this year, let's talk about our CPA. And while we know it's hard to get excited about accounting and spreadsheets and cash books and P&L's, it's a little easier to get excited about another small business owner who specializes in helping other small businesses. Joe Kitchens of Duncan & Kitchens, LLC has been our knight and shining armor since we met him a couple of years ag...o. He has an office in Clarkesville and Clayton and specializes in small businesses taxes, accounting, and payroll. If you've ever met Joe, you know he's a gracious, kind and steady man of character. He doesn't get too high or get too low. And on top of all that, he's awfully wise. Joe has helped us navigate and think through so many key decisions that have been instrumental in helping our small business grow and thrive. He's always there when we needed to think through things, figure out complicated issues and help come up with short and long term plans for the future of our business. As almost everyone knows, there isn't much fun that goes into taxes. And even more so if you're a small business. And while it hasn't always been fun, Joe has made everything for us as painless as possible. We know it's weird to start talking about Christmas and the holidays before Halloween and Thanksgiving have even passed. But this year has been awfully odd if you haven't noticed. And with Wal-Mart, Target, and the Amazons of the world starting their holiday specials last month, it's put even more pressure on small businesses like ours to innovate and differentiate ourselves from the big box stores. Our plan is to launch some daily and weekly specials along with bundles that... help you save this year beginning on November 1st. But in the interim, we did want to let you know that we're rolling out a brand new initiative . . . virtual and private in-person personal shopping appointments. So whether you want to shop from the comfort of your own home or to shop privately without the crowds before our store opens, we want to give you a few extra options this year that allow you to shop safely in a way that matches your comfort level. Continuing on with our list of people who we couldn't run our small business without, it's time to talk about and thank Danger Press. Danger is based in Atlanta and they do all of our screen printing. From t-shirts to hoodies to kid clothing to tanks and on down the line. When we talk about some of our partners being an extension of our staff and family, Danger is it. When you support our small business, you're supporting theirs as well. From Melyssa who answers every questi...on, mocks up our art on mannequins, and writes our quotes to Ed who is always a phone call or text away to run through logistics to their entire staff that screen prints with love every single one of our shirts. Danger is the epitome of what a small business partner could and should be. We are fully restocked in the latest edition of the Local Exposure Magazine. We sold out of them in a few days last go round but they are now back in stock in the store. This is only their second issue but they are coming out of the gate strong with the Women's Issue focused on the strong and diverse women of Southern Appalachia. Local Exposure Magazine was started by our friends Tammi and Ronnie a few months ago with the goal of creating a magazine focused on local and regi...onal storytelling and photography. The first issue was awesome but the second issue is even better as they profile women from all across the region. They also have a studio in downtown Clayton for studio photography sessions, headshots, family portraits, graduation photos, workshops and more. This week we're going to take the time to celebrate some of the people who are more or less an extension of our staff and who we couldn't have survived this year without. Every time we go to a new spot we commit to taking photos of our food before we devour it. Somehow that almost never happens. This morning we got a couple bacon biscuits, a chicken biscuit and some cheese grits and by the time we remembered to take a picture we only had this big old cat head biscuit as large as our hand left over. Our friend Kelsey opened a new spot on 441 in Wiley this week, half way between Tallulah Gorge State Park and Clayton. Four years ago today we opened the doors to our shop as we tried to somehow pivot from the world of social media to the world of real relationships. It seems like just yesterday and it seems like it’s been a few decades long. Or maybe that’s just 2020. Either way we’re beyond humbled and jazzed to still be here four years later. A lot has changed from our original 800-900 square foot location. Then again a lot is still the same. We’re still trying to practice the best hospit...ality we can. We’re still trying to live rightly with our neighbors. We’re still trying to put more back in than we take out. And we’re still trying to reinvigorate the possibilities of family run small business in the age of Amazon. It’s been fun, stressful, hopeful, challenging, and inspiring with a touch of special. Often in the same week. We can’t thank you enough for showing up every time we throw our doors open. We can’t thank you enough for your kind words and encouragement online. We can’t thank you enough for the conversations and laughs and relationships we’ve made. We only had about 50 people show up to our grand opening 4 years ago but we know the names of all 50 people and have become close friends with at least 49 of you. So tonight we’re feeling an extra dose of gratitude and would be remiss if we didn’t say it directly to you ... thank you. Thank you for allowing us to do what we love. We've got some new neighbors in town . . . Holistic Mountain Market. Our friends Dana and Mitch have opened a health food store downtown! They have vitamins, supplements, Georgia-made CBD products, and small groceries. Best part . . . THEY HAVE SMOOTHIES. And even better . . . they're named after nostalgic 80s cultural references. Smoothies like "Matcha Man" Randy Savage, Islands In The Stream, Pumpky Brewster . . . and our favorite, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle magic mix. ...We stopped by the other day to get a smoothie and check in on how they were doing and their space looks absolutely amazing. They restored the wood floors back to their original luster, shined up the roof tin, and took over one of the empty buildings on Savannah Street - about a 30 second walk from our store. My grandfather was drafted into the Army in 1940 at the age of 22 to join the fight in WWII. He passed when I was young so I never got to know him deeply like I did my other grandparents. But what I do know of him, I know from the stories that my dad and my uncles and my aunts passed down to me. And by all accounts, he was a fine man who loved his wife, his community and his family like no other. These stories have always inspired me and provided a legacy that I hope to live ...up to. He married my grandmother in the summer of 1940 and was drafted just a few months later. As a father of two boys that I adore and a wife that I'm madly in love with, I simply can't imagine how crushing it would be to leave all that I love behind. But that's exactly what my PawPaw did. And it's exactly what so many brave men and women have done over the years in service to our country. As I reflect today on my grandfather's life and service, I am reminded not just of him, but of my other friends and family who have also served. And the example each of them have provided both to their families and their communities. Their love of neighbor. Their love of family. Their love of country. My grandfather wasn't perfect any more than our country is perfect. But like so many of our veterans, he sacrificed part of himself in service to something larger than himself in an effort to improve upon it in some way. And that's a powerful example all of our veterans have modeled and given us to follow. So today, we say thank you. For those who are still with us, thank you so much for the sacrifices you have made on behalf of myself and so many others. For those who are now gone, we thank you for the legacy you have left behind for your family and friends and country to follow. As we remember the veterans in our lives today, I hope we all keep this quote from JFK as a gentle reminder to live up to the ideals they have modeled for us. "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." - JFK

We recently got a chance to eat at Bleu Canoe and had a fantastic experience. It was only our 2nd meal out since all this started and we went specifically because we heard they had a big spaced out deck under a massive tree. It sounded like the perfect place for dinner on a nice Fall evening and it didn't disappoint. The entire front of house and back of house team wore masks and even better, they have a huge spacious deck with socially distanced seating. This isn’t sponsore...d in any way we just had a great experience and wanted to brag on their owners and staff. They had a grand opening planned for the month that everything got shut down but have been adapting and evolving ever since then as best they can. As you can imagine, it's tough to open a small business at any point - let alone in the middle of all this mess.
