Today, we honor Dr. Charles DeWitt Watts (1917-2004). The first African American board-certified surgeon in the state of North Carolina, Dr. Watts spent more than half a century breaking barriers to care that have been traditionally placed on Black communities and changing the landscape of care in his state. #BlackHistoryMonth

In memory of Dr. Luther "Butch" Wolff, Jr., St. Francis-Emory Healthcare would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends. His career spanned over 40 years in making communities healthier. Dr. Wolff followed in his father's footsteps to become one of our area's most celebrated general surgeons. At St. Francis, he served as Chief of Staff, Department Head of Surgery and Medical Director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center. Dr. Wolff was also apart of the fir...st medical team sent to visit "sister hospital," The Mater Dei, in Zimbabwe to bring quality healthcare to the community. His compassion, skill, and profound contributions to healthcare in the Valley were recognized in 2013 when he was awarded the Clarence C. Butler Service and Leadership Award. In his award comments, he wrote, "Since I was very young, I knew I belonged in the OR, and for that reason, I have never looked upon it as work". St. Francis is committed to continuing the quality care and legacy of Dr. Wolff. https://buff.ly/3nN5dLf

St. Francis would like to congratulate Ariel Smith, Haylee Kelso, and Lori Pate, our latest recipient of this prestigious award. The DAISY Award recognizes the extraordinary compassion and care nurses provide every day. Congratulations! Here is a snippet of what their nominator said about them: "You always take good care of your patients and are the epitome of what a good nurse is. Your caring and compassion make a terrible disease bearable. I am grateful for you and keep yo...u in my prayers." "You are all so kind and compassionate to me and everyone else. Thank you for being there for me and offering a safe and secure place to be during chemo."
