Winged Beauty Butterflies 16.12.2020

Looking back on a beautiful May 2019 photograph! May this upcoming year turn a big page and allow us to all get together again in person.

I love the search for butterflies that you will appreciate hearing about. I daydream of discoveries, of finding butterflies that y'all will be excited to see. The most impossible daydreams? Finding a new butterfly, once never seen or photographed before. https://wingedbeauty.com/2020/10/22/touched-by-a-cloak/

At the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area, in Florida's Panhandle, who did we meet? Just as you'd hope, there was this Phaon Crescent butterfly. As soon as I saw those sweet cream colored bands on its fresh forewings, I knew this little beaut was a Phaon. The clincher was the abundance of its hostplant, Fogfruit, growing low on the trailside, close to the marshy, swampy Big Bend wetland.... http://wingedbeauty.com//oh-baby-you-know-what-i-like-pha/

This Viceroy #butterfly flew in while we were taking photographs at Woody Pond at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, on the #Georgia coastline. It flew to a sumac that grew on a strip separating the trail from the pond’s edge (think alligators) https://wingedbeauty.com/2020/12/04/macon-sumacs/

I so appreciated the chance to find Harvester #Butterflies or Mourning Cloaks or Eastern Commas or Northern Pearly-Eyes peacefully imbibing mineral-laced moisture from that little puddle on Nichol Road Trail in Raccoon Creek State Park, #Pennsylvania! https://wingedbeauty.com/2020//21/former-artillery-officer/

In 2017 I joined a stellar group of folks at Adams County, at the southern tip of #Ohio. Angela, Dave, Joe, Barbara Ann AH and Flower. There, in the OMG!! Lynx Prairie Preserve, there, I found it! Purple Coneflower, #native and Spectacular! https://wingedbeauty.com/2020/12/02/native-coneflower/

Here's a sight that thrills me. Working a trail in Big Bend Wildlife Management Area, and spotting a Georgia Satyr, with that lipstick red ring encircling those sweet, sweet eyes. Thinking of it sent me to Google the lyrics of Georgia On My Mind, and Yep, this butterfly is one of the handful that rocket met to excitation. 'Still in peaceful dreams I see, The road leads back to you.' March 2021, let there be no COCID-19 hereabouts, and let me again work the trail edges of Big Bend WMA and norther Florida, to reacquaint with this sweet pearl of a Satyr, and my fav Palamedes Swallowtails and let me meet a handful of southern butterflies that have yet eluded me. Am I a dreamer? Jeff http://wingedbeauty.com//georgia-still-in-peaceful-dream-/

Can't forget this moment, not for a long time. The Georgia Native Plant Society (GNPS) had posted on Facebook, of the virtues of Sumac bushes/small trees. It caught my eye, for my city kid roots (Brooklyn, New York) always tagged sumacs as B-A-D. Poison sumac was found in Brooklyn and the other 5 boroughs of New York City. It was to be avoided.... http://wingedbeauty.com/2020/12/04/sumacs-in-macon/

This #butterfly sure has difficulty trying to hide in the dark National Butterfly Center grass. Those bold, bright red stripes blare out at you. Makes you #wonder why this rare butterfly, that occasionally visits there, wonder why it has those red stripes. Your comments are welcomes at https://wingedbeauty.com/2020/11/11/erato-heliconian

I met this insect in that forbidden arroyo west of Phoenix, #Arizona. I was in my search for #butterflies, there just a very limited number of plants in flower, that #summer, with the temperature reaching the upper '90's, around 10 A.M.
