and caption by Carlton Mackey. FIGHT ON -a visual interpretation of African American Spirituals. 63 painting series by Aaron Henderson...a man I’ve known since I was 17 years old, father of a son I’ve called friend since the same age, founding artist of @zucotgallery, a man I literally call Baba. So honored to be asked to be part of this series. So honored by the opportunity to sit for what became 3 paintings in your book! So honored that the spiritual I’m representing i...s one that I want more than anything to embody. The caption under the lyrics read: The enslaved poet who wrote this song felt the power of his/her words would be a little light to penetrate the darkness and he would sing and shine it regardless of the situation. He would keep his light alive and inspire others to shine their little lights until this darkness (slavery) upon earth is destroyed. - May it be so. See more

"I was born in Birmingham, AL and raised during the Civil Rights Movement. I have vivid memories of my parents trying to become registered voters. When I was in the seventh and eighth grade, my parents would attend Movement Meetings, which were held so the community could support each other in their quest to become registered voters. During that time, voter suppression was the law of the land and in order for African Americans to become registered voters, we had to pass ...a voter literacy test. In the jim crow south, these literacy tests were effective means of limiting the number of African Americans allowed at the polls, regardless of economic, social, or educational background. To fight this evil, The Movement provided sample questions with answers that might appear on a test. These sample questions were printed on mimeograph sheets made available to those who were trying to register to vote. I was given the task of helping my parents prepare for the literacy test using the mimeograph pages of questions. For almost 6 months, every morning before school, I would read the questions as they made lunches, got dressed, and made breakfast. They finally both passed the test and became registered voters (and I got an A in Civics that year). When my father got his opportunity to vote, he got dressed up in his best suit, put on his favorite lapel pin, which read VOTE BABY VOTE. He wore that pin to every election afterwards!" -Aaron F. Henderson . . Things We Encountered on our way to the Polls : 29x41 : Gouache on Paper : Aaron F. Henderson
