How is Asthma Diagnosed? Asthma is diagnosed through a combination of detailed history of asthma symptoms as well as lung function testing (spirometry) in older children and adults. Spirometry is a simple breathing test that measures how much and how fast air you can blow air out of your lungs. Sometimes spirometry is done before and after a short acting asthma medicine (bronchodilator) is inhaled. How is atopic dermatitis treated? An important goal of treatment of eczema is to break the itch-scratch cycle. The first, and perhaps most vital step in treatment, involves careful daily skin care designed to keep the skin clean and well hydrated. Research shows that even the unaffected skin of atopic dermatitis patients cannot retain water like normal skin does, so it dries out very quickly, worsening the itchy sensation. To combat this, the eczema patient should follow the ..."soak and seal" technique: -Bathe every day for at least 15-20 minutes in lukewarm, not hot, water. Showers are acceptable for older children or adults. Use a mild cleanser such as Dove, Tone, or Cetaphil. Avoid harsh soaps like Ivory, Dial, or Irish Spring. After soaking in the tub, gently pat the skin dry with a towel, taking care not to rub the skin. Within 1-2 minutes after the end of the bath, apply generous amounts of a moisturizer to seal in the moisture which the skin has soaked up like a sponge. Examples of good moisturizers include Eucerin, Aquaphor, Vanicream, or Vaseline. Creams and ointments are better than lotions, which contain alcohol and can dry the skin.
