A couple of weekends ago I went to Carolina Combatives and Fitness to conduct an MBC/CBC workshop. First, Trent and his crew were all I could ever hope for in ...students. It's clear that Trent attracts and trains great people. To change up routine a bit we took a deep dive into the Shoulder Stop. I love the commonality of techniques in all that we do, so we spent a good portion of our time exploring the physiological potential of the shoulder stop. We looked at it from an empty hand perspective, finishing with a knee to the groin area and side kicking the attacker's left leg. Then we added using the Shoulder Stop to draw a knife and did a shoulder stop ending in cutting the biceps and then the quad and finishing from there in multiple ways. Then we revisited the empty hand aspect adding an outside wrist lock and various takedowns from there. A shoulder stop may seem like a simple technique for defending against a wide punch, but if we further explore the potential of the technique we can find a lot of really powerful and effective techniques to help you stay safe. So find an uninfected human and validate that you can perform a solid Shoulder Stop against a committed attacker. I'll soon make a video describing what I'm talking about to further help you visualize what I'm talking about. Stay Safe! See more

You know I love me some Hubud... part 2. Hubud is one of the greatest drills you can learn. The transitions are often challenging, especially as you are gaining... some fluency with the motions. I am breaking the switch down, in detail, and just one application that you can also play with. There is literally a limitless amount of things that you can do. Here is part 2. See more

I just returned from teaching an MBC Progressive Skills seminar at Buckeye Combatives in Ohio. It was my first seminar since February and the first to be held i...n the current COVID-19 climate. MBCers from far and wide embraced the opportunity to gather, reunite, and train hard. Since the craziness of the past few months has impacted everyone's regular training, we focused on "getting back in the groove" and reaffirming sound fundamentals. We then built on that foundation with some of the latest improvements to MBC and CBC, as well as a few other "tidbits of evil" that I've conjured up. I am extremely grateful to everyone who participated for making the investment to be there, working incredibly hard despite the hot weather, and, most of all, respecting their fellow MBCers by wearing masks and following strict hygiene protocols throughout the training. HUGE thanks to Eric Kaltenborn for organizing and hosting the seminar, to Bryan McKean and his family for hosting and spoiling me, to all the MBC instructors who helped me demonstrate and teach the material, and to all who participated!!! You all ROCK!!!!! Stay safe, Mike

Twenty-two years ago today, we lost a legend--the great Col. Rex Applegate. Working with him and learning from him were two of the greatest privileges of my life. Thank you for your knowledge and mentorship, sir. I miss you.
