Hamamelis virginiana- Common Witch Hazel A very charming, small tree with rich history and lore. One of three species of Witch Hazel native to North America, Hamamelis virginiana has been a key medicinal plant of Native American cultures for hundreds of years as an astringent and anti-inflammatory agent. Historically, it's forked branches have also been used as dowsing rods to locate sources of water by Native Americans and European Settlers. ... Witch hazel's smooth, arching branches create a picturesque form in the landscape. Fragrant, bright golden flower clusters with ribbon-like petals hang from branches in late Fall, and last until the first sign of Spring. Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil, and full sun to part shade. 15-20 feet tall, but can grow up to 30 feet in ideal conditions. www.beechhollowfarms.com #grownative #witchhazel #hamamelis #virginiana #nativeamericanmedicine #herbalremedy #pollinator #habitat #nativetree #georgia #piedmont #botanical #fall #blooms
Happy New Year to the most wonderful collaborators - our native plant gardeners! This is why every native plant you plant in your garden is precious, and is important, to the tiny lives that make the planet run:
The winter persistent berries of Parsley Hawthorn, Crataegus marshallii.
Fall colors of our fringe trees (Chionanthus virginicus). We can't wait to see them come alive with sugary smelling flowers next year. It's hard to think of a more attractive and underutilized tree! www.beechhollowfarms.com #fringetree #chionanthusvirginicus #nativeplants #grownative #pollinatorplants #wildflowers #pollinator #habitat #nativetrees #georgia
One last peek before these seeds are tucked in for the winter! Seeds from over 300 species of Native Wildflowers are pictured here, and most of these species we will offer next year! This winter we are stratifying our seeds in the greenhouse where colder temperatures should help in breaking seed dormancy, and also increase germination rates in the Spring. We are truly letting Mother Nature her work her magic. #grownative #plantnative #nativeplants #Georgia #Peidmont #wildflower #seeds #stratification #dormancy #natural #cycle #mothernature
This week’s featured native shrubs are Aronia melanocarpa, Black Chokeberry, from the Blue Ridge, Appalachia, and the northern part of Georgia, and Red Chokeberry, Aronia arbutifolia which is common in the Piedmont. Chokeberries are edible, fruit bearing shrubs whose berries are used by humans as well as migrating birds and wildlife. The pomes (often called berries) of both species are edible. www.beechhollowfarms.com
This week's featured native shrub is American Styrax, Styrax americanus. Once this small tree reaches five feet tall it starts blooming, and how! In late spring the whole tree becomes festooned with white stars that dangle from the underside of the branches. The flowers dance in passing breezes, and keep your bees happy. www.beechhollowfarms.com #georgianativeplants #grownative #wildflowers #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #plantconservation #habitat #butterflies #bees
During your travels throughout the Southeast this time of year, you may have noticed the range of blue to pink flowers of Downy Lobelia (Lobelia puberla) on the roadsides. It is often overlooked when compared to its earlier blooming relatives, Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) and Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), however Downy Lobelia is the most abundant blue Lobelia in the Southeast. It attracts numerous pollinators including butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and it offers such a wide variety of color to any pollinator garden. www.beechhollowfarms.com #pollinator #garden #pollinatorhabitat #Lobelia #nativeplant #hummingbird #bee #butterfly #grownative #native #plants #Southeast #Piedmont

This week’s featured native plants are our woodland blooming asters, the Big Leaf Woods aster, Eurybia jonesiae, the Cornell Leaf Aster, Doellingeria infirma, and our White Woods aster, Euyrybia divaricata. All three of these shade blooming asters prefer rich well drained soils and open shade. The crown of the Big Leaf Aster has big (often 4-6 inches long), handsome, blue-green leaves with wine colored petioles and stems. In late August through the end of September, the stem...s are topped with billowing clusters of whitish pink aster flowers. The Cornell Leaf Aster is a slightly taller, more slender plant, with a wispier habit. It's leaves are a dark green, against a burgundy stem. Dainty white, daisy-like flowers cluster in a loose panicle at the top of the stem. The White woods aster is rhizomatous, slowly building a colony of heart-shaped emerald leaves 8 inches above the leaf litter. The White Woods Aster blooms in September, through the first half of October. www.beechhollowfarms.com #georgianativeplants #grownative #wildflowers #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #plantconservation #habitat #butterflies #bees

This week’s featured native plants are the perennial sunflowers. Woodland Sunflower, Helianthus divaricata, and Littlehead Sunflower, Helianthus microcephala, are two useful species. Littlehead Sunflower blooms earlier than most of the other perennial sunflowers, starting in August, and ending in September. Woodland Sunflower blooms from mid September through late October. The flowers on Littlehead Sunflower are a bit smaller, but not much, the petals are a lighter yellow, and the plant is 18 inches shorter than Woodland Sunflower. Both species provide plentiful nectar and pollen forage for pollinators, and lots of sunflower seeds for songbirds. www.beechhollowfarms.com #georgianativeplants #grownative #wildflowers #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #plantconservation #habitat #butterflies #bees

This week’s featured native plant is that late blooming beauty, the Georgia Aster, Symphyotrichum georgianum. Although this plant starts opening its purple blooms in October, it is one of the last plants to bloom in our Piedmont, often putting out blossoms until frost knocks the plant back. www.beechhollowfarms.com #georgianativeplants #grownative #wildflowers #nativeplants #pollinatorgarden #plantconservation #habitat #butterflies #bees
