IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR when grasses typically die down and people start feeding more hay. Hay is a dry forage, and while it's a great choice, it does have it's ...drawbacks. For one, the hay grown and economically purchased in this area is "coastal," meaning it's usually very fine and soft. If your horse is drinking plenty of water and has access to a little broader roughage each day, things are usually fine. However, coastal hays such as Bermuda and Tifton varieties are responsible for almost all of the impaction colics we see as the weather changes. With this in mind, take a peek at your feeding program. Now is a great time to add electrolyte powder to your horse's feed (never his water), purchase a few bales of alfalfa or an alfalfa mix, and limit access to those fresh round bales. A little foresight now will possibly save you some money and potential heartache later. See more
