Hall County Emergency Rental Assistance Program Information The Hall County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is a public relief program providing funds to assist County residents at risk of eviction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.... Households in Hall County who have individuals qualified for unemployment benefits, incurred significant costs, or experienced other financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic are highly encouraged to apply. The program will begin accepting applications in early April 2021.

On Friday February 26th, the Gainesville Fire Department celebrated Alan Payne's retirement. Alan gave 23 years of dedicated service to the Gainesville Fire Department and the citizens of Gainesville. Congratulations on your retirement Alan! We wish you the best and hope you enjoy your retirement.

Did you know that today is the 145th birthday of the Gainesville Fire Department? On February 18, 1876, the Gainesville Hook & Ladder Company was established as a volunteer fire department. In the late 1890's it was renamed as the Gainesville Fire Department. Happy 145th Birthday to the Gainesville Fire Department! My how we've grown! Attached are pictures of GFD Station #2 in the mid 1950's and then the new Station #2 that opened in the fall of 2020.... We are proud to serve our Gainesville community!

It is with heartfelt sadness that the Gainesville Fire Department announces the passing of Battalion Chief James Michael "Poopsy" Copeland (Ret.) Chief Copeland worked with the Gainesville Fire Department for 25 years before retiring. For his last six years with the department, he served as the Training Chief. Although he trained many firefighters across north Georgia, the GFD Class of '93 became known as Poopsy's troops. We will miss him dearly! With the upcoming cold weather, the Gainesville Fire Department would like to remind everyone about Home Heating Fire Safety. Here are some tips to keep you safe from fires: Put fireplace ashes in a metal container and put water on them to cool. Keep container ten feet away from your house. Keep space heaters three feet away from anything that can burn. Keep them on a flat surface and inspect cords for frays and cuts. Do not plug them into an extension cord.... Keep oxygen tanks five feet from a heat source and open flames. Never use an oven or range as a heating source.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving Holidays, the Gainesville Fire Department would like to remind everyone about cooking safety. This year's fire prevention week slogan was Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! 44% of all home fires start in the kitchen! We want you to have a safe Thanksgiving. Along with cooking safety, we want to remind you to prevent the spread of COVID by following the Georgia Department of Public Health's recommendation to stay home and celebrate with those in you household. We’re inviting our community to light up the town and enter several outdoor decorating contest categories for a chance to win a visit from Santa and his parade of faithful city employees. The Gainesville Fire Department would like to inform everyone about the upcoming predicted impacts from Hurricane Zeta. Attached is a video from the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. Also attached is a notice from the City of Gainesville referencing delayed openings of City facilities. We encourage everyone to be prepared for severe weather as it moves through our area overnight and early tomorrow.

The Gainesville Fire Department would like to invite everyone to check on their neighbors this morning. Here are a few pictures from yesterday's storm damage. Many of our neighbors are still without power and dealing with storm debris. During times like this, it's important to remember to reach out to your neighbors and offer assistance as you can. It's a great feeling to be able to help others when we can. We are a strong community and have a lot to offer each other! Please stay away from downed power lines and trees. Stay strong Gainesville! This too shall pass.

The Gainesville Fire Department, and all public safety agencies, are working diligently to answer all emergency calls in our area. As Hurricane Zeta moved through our area as a Tropical Storm, it has brought us rain and heavy winds. There are many power outages, traffic lights out, trees on power lines, and roadways closed. Please be safe and stay away from any downed trees and power lines. Power companies are also working very hard to restore power, but with the heavy winds they have to be concerned with their safety as well. All agencies are working as quickly as possible to restore all services. Be assured that all emergency calls are being answered!

Elementary students at Gainesville City Schools will be better informed about the coronavirus thanks to a recent donation by the Gainesville Fire Department. Instead of fire prevention materials, the GFD redirected its focus toward COVID-19 when recently purchasing educational materials for the community. Gainesville City Schools received 3,000 individually sealed COVID-19 educational packets, each including an I can be coronavirus free! learning and activity book, crayons,... sticker and bookmark. We hope these materials purchased through the CARES Act will help educate our children further to make good decisions during the pandemic, including but not limited to wearing masks or face coverings when appropriate, social distancing, and washing and sanitizing their hands often, said Gainesville Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough. While in-classroom learning has resumed in Gainesville and across Georgia, students can ensure they and others stay healthy by covering the material in their packets regularly, preferably with a teacher, parent or guardian. The Gainesville Fire Department would like for everyone to "Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen". Fire safety in the kitchen has been this years focus. The Gainesville Fire Department would like to share a video of the ribbon cutting ceremony of our new Fire Station #2. This new station replaces the old Station #2 that was built in 1954. On Tuesday October 6, 2020, the Gainesville Fire Department presented our annual awards during the City Council meeting. We are very proud to award the following personnel: Rookie of the Year - FFII/EMT Karl Schaefer Firefighter of the Year - FFIII/EMT-P Justin Carpenter... Officer of the Year - Lt. Jonathan Sutton Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough was given a special presentation by the City Manager for his 35 years of service to the Gainesville Fire Department. Congratulations to each award winner! Your outstanding service to the City of Gainesville is much appreciated!

Continuing with Fire Prevention Week, the Gainesville Fire Department would like to provide some additional tips to Serve Up Fire Safety In the Kitchen. Keep kids safe by making a three foot distance around hot things. Children can be burned or scalded when their in their curiosity or willingness to help cook, they attempt to move a hot pot or pan. Keep a lid close by when cooking with grease. A small grease fire can be extinguished by placing a lid on the pan.... Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how t...o stay safe in case of a fire. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. 2020 Campaign This year’s FPW campaign, Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! TM works to educate everyone about the simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen. The Gainesville Fire Department graciously accepted the generous donation of two Haz Mat spill kits from John Soules Foods in honor of Doyle . Mr. Bickner served as the Ammonia Refrigeration Manager at John Soules Foods until January of this year and passed away in June. Mr. Bickner had a passion for teaching those willing to learn about ammonia refrigeration and shaped these men into highly skilled technicians. The Gainesville Fire Department is very honored to accept this donation in memory of Mr. Bickner. Thank you John Soules Foods for your generous donation!

The Georgia Open Burning Ban for 2020 will be lifted starting this Thursday October 1, 2020. Each year the burn ban is lifted from October 1 through April 30 and the Gainesville Fire Department allows residential burn permits to be issued daily, as weather permits. The Gainesville Fire Department would like to remind everyone about the burning requirements for those residing within the city limits of Gainesville. Obtain a burn permit by calling 770-534-3612... Fire personnel will come and inspect your site and issue permit A garden hose or method of extinguishment must be present Burn only leaves, grass or small tree limbs (3 diameter or less) Burn site must be 50 feet from structures or property line A competent adult must attend the fire at all times Common sense must prevail The fire must be out completely before dark As always, our main concern is the safety of everyone involved with burning and those around the burn area. On Friday September 11th, 2020, we pause to remember the events that occurred on September 11, 2001 and the lives lost on that fateful day. As we pause to reflect on the 19th anniversary of that day, we encourage everyone to remember the unity that came upon our nation in those following days. Due to the unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be conducting an in- person ceremony but instead we invite everyone to take a moment to remember those lives lost. The public safe...ty agencies in Gainesville and Hall County will hear the following announcements over our radios, as we honor their memories. In memory of nearly 3,000 Americans that were lost on 9/11/2001, which includes 343 FDNY firefighters and 68 police and EMT first responders, we will be participating in a memorial service today by sounding a special all tone alert at 0846, the time the first highjacked plane struck the North Tower as well as each subsequent act of terrorism carried out on US commercial airline passenger planes. It is important that we never forget the brave firefighters of the FDNY as well as the other first responders that sacrificed their lives in an attempt to rescue so many in need.
