The Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta will host a virtual auction fundraiser together with the GACF from February 14 - February 21. Our "Show some Liebe (love) for language" auction is timed perfectly to allow bidders the chance to get their Valentine something special and pandemic-proof to celebrate their love beyond the Valentine’s day holiday With a goal of $20,000 to support the Goethe-Zentrum language program, we will be able to offer local German educators professional developme...nt sessions, create much-needed instructional activities to be used at all learning levels in our courses and at public schools and universities throughout the Southeast, sponsor qualified language professionals to become certified German language examiners, and develop a new curriculum for our language program using a modern book with digital integration for optimal virtual learning. We hope you’ll join us in showing some Liebe for language beginning on the day of love, February 14! Stay tuned for the auction site link once it goes live at 9am on Sunday, February 14, and keep an eye in the coming weeks for teasers of some of the items and experiences we will have available for purchase. If you have an item or experience you'd like to donate to our fundraising efforts, we'd love to have you involved as a sponsor for the auction as well! January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and is recognized by the UN as #InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay. Although it will never be known for certain how many lives were lost at the hands of the Nazi regime, it's most commonly cited at around six million Jewish victims and an estimated five million additional victims of National Socialism including Roma (Gypsies), Germans with disabilities, and some of the Slavic pe...oples (especially Poles and Russians), and other groups persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists, Socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals. Today, #weremember each and every victim of National Socialism, both in honor of their sacrifice and in the hopes of preventing future atrocities from occurring between our fellow humans. To learn more about the Holocaust and how to be a part of its remembrance, we encourage you to visit the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance website at https://www.holocaustremembrance.com/.

It's moving day! While we watch decades worth of boxes be loaded on to the moving trucks, we want to take a moment to remember the wonderful days and nights of movie screenings, wine tastings, author readings, election watch parties, Bundesliga, language courses, and all the cultural and language events in between with our incredible supporters, students, volunteers, interns, and staff that we've had the pleasure of hosting at our Colony Square offices over the years. 1197... Peachtree and 1201 Peachtree will always be a part of the Goethe-Zentrum story, but we are excited to begin the next chapter of our story together with our colleagues at the Alliance Française d'Atlanta as we refocus and rebuild an even better Franco-German cultural center for our Southeastern supporters. Do you have a favorite memory of the Goethe-Zentrum at Colony Square? Share it along with a photo if you have one so we can remember the good times together!

January 27, 1945, marks the day Auschwitz, a Nazi concentration camp which saw the deaths of over one million people, was liberated by the Red Army. Nearly 7,000 people who had not been forced to leave on a death march were left in the camp and rescued. Now, we recognize this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We hope you’ll join the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Breman Museum in remembering the lives lost through readings of youth diary excerpts from the Ho...locaust. https://fb.me/e/3TLKX2Cxa

On Sunday, we had the distinct pleasure to host our highest attended Germanic Language & Dialect series to date! Over 130 Yiddish-enthusiasts gathered with us via Zoom to hear from Dr. Liliane Kshensky Baxter about her experience growing up in a Yiddish-speaking household, the unique linguistics of Yiddish and its connection to German, and the perseverance of Yiddish throughout history. We are happy to share a recording of the event so that everyone can enjoy and learn about this incredible Germanic language! We'd like to give a special thanks to our partners at The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta. You can learn more about the museum and its programming on its website: https://www.thebreman.org/.

Reading in German can be overwhelming and often times, a student will convince themselves not to read a book, especially a book in a foreign language, before even opening the first page. Antolin is a platform similar to AR for those who grew up in the American education system. It incentives children to read books and tests their comprehension for a points reward system. ... The The German School of Atlanta has listed many books compatible with Antolin they'd like to include in their school library so that their student population has access to them on our virtual Wunschbaum, and would appreciate any support in purchasing these titles and others to build their library further. To browse our teachers' wishlist, please visit www.wunschbaum.givesmart.com or text "wunschbaum" to 76278. Wir danken Ihnen im Voraus!

Although today is a day of great celebration in Germany as the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we also must remember the tragedy that befell the country on this same day in 1938 on Kristallnacht. While congratulating President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris on their victory, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel made note of today's divided meaning in Germany history. CHANCELLOR MERKEL: "Ladies and gentlemen, today, on 9 November 2020, we Ger...mans commemorate both the worst and the best moments in our history, as we do every year on this day. We remember the disgrace of 9 November 1938, the pogroms against Jewish citizens throughout the country, the people who were driven to their deaths, the burning synagogues, the destroyed shops. We remember with shame the victims of the crime against humanity that was the Shoah perpetrated by Germany. And we remember 9 November 1989, the jubilation, the people’s joy bubbling over when, not far from here, at the Brandenburg Gate and along the Berlin Wall, this terrible construction first opened and then fell. Just a few weeks ago, on 3 October, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of our German unity. Without the trust of the Americans in particular, it would not have been possible. For that, I will always be grateful." We at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta are too forever grateful for the transatlantic friendship our two countries share and look forward to its continuation under the new President and Vice President-elect.
