Houston County School District leaders, local elected officials and community leaders celebrated the opening of the Argene Claxton Canning Plant with a ribbon-cutting event this afternoon. A brief program took place outdoors, followed by tours of the canning plant. The plant supports all 13 middle and high school FFA programs in the Houston County School District. The facility was named after Dr. Argene Claxton, who retired from Perry High School in 2017. He served as the ...agricultural education teacher and FFA Advisor for 37 years. Currently he serves in recruitment and retention for Georgia Agricultural Education. Dr. Claxton is well-known for having coached many state and national award-winning teams and individuals. Personally, he has received many honors for his dedication to teaching and agriculture, to include STAR Teacher three times. Dr. Claxton was the youngest person ever inducted into the Georgia Agriculture Education Hall of Fame and the only member whose father was also inducted. To learn more about the Argene Clayton Canning Plant, please visit our district website at https://www.hcbe.net/canningplant.

It’s Throwback Thursday! This week’s 150th Anniversary Throwback Thursday series features National School Linch Week (NSLW), celebrated the second full week of October. President John F. Kennedy created NSLW in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. The COVID-19 pandemic has, without a doubt, shown just how incredibly essential school meals are for students and their families.... Photos in this post are from The Warner Robins Sun, October 14, 1969 edition. Do you have history from the district? We would love to hear from you! Please send us a private Facebook message or email [email protected]. #NSLW2020 #150YearsStrong #AllinHCSS
