KECB and Elbert County lost a good friend yesterday. Gary Jones, the editor of our local newspaper, The Elberton Star, passed away. He cared about the environment and demonstrated that by not only publishing photos of local pickups and advertising events for us but also participating in Adopt a Road litter pickups with the Rotary Club. Sometimes Gary could only help for part of the pickup but he always came if possible. Elberton has certainly lost a cheerleader for a more beautiful environment. Thanks, Gary! Please secure your load! "A driver who failed to properly secure their load nearly cost an innocent motorist her life in Walker County. Have you ever been driving along the highway and suddenly something jumps out of the open bed of a pick-up or debris falls off the back of a truck in front of you? Maybe you had to brake hard or swerve suddenly to avoid a collision? Serious problems arise when items such as ladders, mattresses, furniture, landscaping supplies and constru...ction debris fall off of trailers or other vehicles. Unsecured loads are responsible for about 25,000 accidents each year in North America, resulting in approximately 80-90 DEATHS. (Source: AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety). Thank You WCSO Deputy Brewer and GSP Trooper Ballard #SecureYourLoad #CourteousVigilance" - Northwest Georgia Scanner This is, unfortunately, a great example of why we say that unsecured cargo can be some of the most dangerous types of litter.

Another great recycling event! We collected appliances, tires, tv’s and more! Document Destruction Services, Inc provided 3 hours of shredding and they stayed busy! We also collected gently used books for Operation Paperback. Good day with great folks! #GreatAmericanCleanup #reconsiderlitter

Elbert County Youth Lives Matter had a great event on Saturday April 10, 2021. There was a good mix of adults helping with the students who picked up a total of 41 bags of litter in the Pinetown area. We finished up with a well deserved pizza party. @KeepAmericaBeautiful Great American Cleanup #DoBeautifulThings #cleanYOURblock

In the past couple weeks we have had some wonderful volunteers who have picked up over 600 pounds of trash. Mercer Dr. had 6 volunteers picking up 140 pounds in 2 hours. Jones Ferry Rd had 2 volunteers picking up 60 pounds in 2 hours and Bodie Rayle Rd with 6 volunteers picked up 440 pounds in 3 hours! This is what proud citizens of Elbert do to keep our county beautiful. It’s the Great American Cleanup until June 20. We challenge YOU to help! We will give you supplies. Who will pick up the most during this event?

We have had facemasks in common use for a matter of months and already this is the reality of it. If you use a mask, be responsible. If you dispose, cut the str...aps and put it in a bin... or better still get a reusable mask. Cut anything that an animal is capable of getting its body parts stuck in. It takes seconds & could save our precious wildlife. The small choices we make have real impact. UPDATE - Thank you to all you amazing people who have shared this. Hopefully we will make people consider their actions and things will improve. You are all awesome C: Mary Corporal Prior
