Congratulations to Valerie Prince, Pharm.D. '93, FAPhA, BCPS, the 20222023 APhA President-elect. She is professor at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy and a clinical pharmacy specialist at St. Vincent's East Family Medicine Residency Program in Birmingham, Ala.

On Friday, 132 graduates received Pharm.D. degrees, 7 received Ph.D. degrees, and one received a Pharm.D./Ph.D. dual degree. She graduated with her Pharm.D. in 1984 and has been precepting students since 1985!

COP Professor Martin D’Souza and researchers at Emory University were awarded an R01 NIH grant to study whether oxytocin-encapsulated nanoparticles targeted to the brain, will help lessen seizures and behavioral deficits in childhood epilepsy. The Comprehensive Progression Assessments are underway today for our August entry P1s, a vital part of our renewed curriculum that tests students at the end of their P1-P3 year before progression to the next academic year. Our P1s are showing their skills in case studies, patient counseling (done via Zoom) and blood pressure readings.

Just moments ago at the Georgia Bio Innovation Summit, Mercer Ph.D. student Mani Deepika Vakkalanka was one of three students who each received the Anthony Shuker Scientific Award for outstanding research posters. Her research was titled "A Novel Diagnostic Method for Detection and Quantitation of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning in Humans."

Our P2s were in the sim lab today, practicing prescription labeling, gowning to work in a clean room, and working up an IV for a patient.

Kudos to faculty member Pamela Moye-Dickerson, PharmD, BCPS, AAHIVP, who was appointed to the Healthcare Information Technology Research (HITR) Study Section for a three-year term. HITR members evaluate grant applications on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services. The committee of more than 20 now has four members with Pharm.D. credentials.

Today, We had another successful DEA Drug Take Back Day! We were able to collect a total of 623 medications (!!!) from 27 different families for a total of 117 ...pounds! A very hearty congratulations to the Mercer NCPA Student Chapter, which was named Student Chapter of the Year for 2019-2020, under the direction of then-President (and now P4) Liddy Cronan! This honor was announced Sunday at the NCPA Foundation annual award ceremony, in addition to our scholarship recipients. Liddy also received the J.C. & Rheba Cobb Memorial Scholarship in Government Affairs. P4 Jasper Westbrook received the William B. Simmons Memorial Scholarship in Pharm...acy Management. P3 Savannah Cunningham received the Partners in Pharmacy Scholarship. P2 Marlee Clements received the Presidential Scholarship. Well done!

Mercer's student chapter of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International received their Chapter of the Year 2019-2020 award on Friday. Keith Allhands, R.Ph., a retired hospital pharmacist in Indiana, who was a guest speaker of the online annual meeting this year, brought the award to Joy Nwoke (c.), president 2019-2020, and current President Omotola Akinsanya.

WOO HOO! Just released NAPLEX results for the Class of 2020: the pass rate on first attempt for Mercer graduates was 94.69%. The state average was 89.41%, and the national average was 91.70%. The MPJE pass rate for Mercer graduates in Georgia on first attempt was 94.26%. The state average was 80.78%, and the national average was 85.74%.

We wanted to share with you the sad news that Dr. James Bartling passed away yesterday. Dr. Bartling, BSPharm '76, PharmD '77, began his career here at the College as an instructor, then director of admissions and later as associate dean of student affairs and admissions. He retired in June 2016 after serving the College for more than 30 years. He was a past president of the Georgia Pharmacy Association, served on the board of directors of the Georgia Pharmacy Foundation a...nd led the PharmAssist Committee for pharmacists in recovery from addiction. He and his wife, Linda, lived in Dunwoody. They had four children. A memorial this weekend will be private. If you wish to send a card, you may send it to the College, and the College will send it to the family.
