You may have heard there’s an important runoff election in Georgia today. I sorely regret not holding on to the tons of campaign mail in order to create a giant papier-mâché elephonky. That’s a little know hybrid species that is part elephant and part donkey. What would you make with all the political mail?

If you give an artist a few minutes at Universal Trading Company, she’s probably going to see a drop-dead deal on a nicely framed, original hand-painted landsca...pe. She will feel compelled to research the name of the painter, and when that inquiry yields no results, she will have to disassemble the piece for clues. Upon discovering that the painting was originally a card sent to someone at Christmas time and that it depicts St. Baldred’s Point, Tyninghome in Scotland, she will fall into a Google search that will cause want and neglect among her family. She will delight in the surprise of another painting underneath. She will use her Ancestry.com membership to search for Gordon and Mary Butters. She will admit she’s in over her head when there are thousands of results, but take special delight in the fact that Australian ship records show that in 1920, (SAME YEAR THAT SAVANNAH ART CLUB WAS FOUNDED) 3 individuals with the last name of Butters boarded a steamship bound for London with the intention of settling in Scotland. Thirty-five year old Charles Butters was listed as a cabinetmaker. Also 35, Jessie Butters worked at domestic duties, 4 year old Gordon Butter’s occupation was listed as Scholer or scholar. I don’t know if he is the same Gordon Butters that painted my thrift/antique store find, or maybe he’s the Gordon Butters that grew up to be a notable scientist. Either way, isn’t it fascinating to have a small glimpse of the stories connected to our creative works? What will people wonder about you when they stumble upon your art in 2070? 2120? Do you have a thrift store/antique mystery to share? See more

Years ago Angela Beasley’s Puppet People hosted SAA for one of our meetings where we got to be awed by the amazing array of puppets, from simple hand puppets to 3x larger than life. I didn’t realize they had travelled all over the country and were even on America’s Got Talent. As they are closing down, they had a fundraiser yard sale last Saturday that will be repeated this Saturday to support the Savannah Coastal Puppetry Guild.

Sunday, October 25th is International Artists Day. Take this as a sign to participate in something creative this weekend: visit your favorite gallery or museum (online or safely in-person); tell an artist in your life how much their work means to you; or create a new work of art! Did you know that City Hall has work from several international artists on display in the Council Chambers? Over the years the City has had many official and unofficial sister city and international ...relationships with communities around the world, most based on common characteristics like being port cities or having strong cultural heritage or tourism communities. This current display shows some of the gifts we have received from cities we have had relationships with. On the right is a gift received from a delegation visiting from Halle, Germany. It is an enameled metal two-dimensional sculpture by the German artist Moritz Goetz and depicts August Hermann Francke holding the town hall of Halle, Germany. Francke started an orphanage in Halle in the 1600s. Goetz (born in Halle in 1964) describes his art as German Pop and this piece is typical of many of his works. Tell us who your favorite Savannah artist is! Please feel free to share this notice with others and repost/reproduce it with the credit line Courtesy of the City of Savannah Municipal Archives. All our local history posts are prepared by the Municipal Archives staff as a team and should be credited to the department rather than to one individual. Thank you and we appreciate all who spread Savannah’s history messages far and wide! City of Savannah Municipal Archives
