When detected early, skin cancer is highly treatable. That’s why we encourage you to perform regular self-exams using the ABCDE’s of Melanoma. The first thing to watch out for in the ABCDE’s of Melanoma? Asymmetry. One half of the spot will be unlike the other. Border is the next thing to look at when performing your skin cancer self-exams. If the spot has an irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined border, that’s a sign it may need to be examined further.... Third on your ABCDE’s of melanoma is Color. Keep an eye out for varying colors in a spot, such as shades of tan, brown, or black, or areas of white, red, or blue. Up next? Diameter. Melanomas are usually greater than 6 millimeters, or the size of a pencil eraser, but when diagnosed, they can be smaller. Last on your skin cancer self-exam list is Evolving.
