My heart quickly dropped to my stomach upon learning the news today. I don’t think anyone ever realizes how much an individual has left a mark on them until that individual has passed on. Yes, Eddie Van Halen had gotten into our psyche. He never talked. He had a cool, innocent smile, and he loved smoking cigarettes. Oh yeah, and he played electric guitar pretty good. Cable television was new. MTV was huge in the early 80’s, and Eddie and the band Van Halen lined up perfe...ctly for overflowing popularity. Come on, guys! You know you did a little air guitar Eddie Van Halen style in your underwear while gleaming ear to ear in the mirror at your bad self! The underwear referenced some Risky Business as Tom Cruise, in case you didn’t know. Eddie, we looked up to you, as we laid on our backs staring at the Van Halen I album cover front and back, if that’s possible. It is possible. It’s just how we spent lots of time in our rooms. I saw you on two tours, Van Halen II and Women and Children First, at the Spectrum in Philly in 79 and 80. Those shows were epic events that I am not so sure will ever see anything as uniquely presented at far from quiet time in history. We had no technology for personal use, and I think it certainly helped to forge all the energies together instead of apart. We hung out a lot! We were basically know as Heads who sported hair parted down the middle, and grown over our ears, and we dressed in jeans, work boots, and fatiques from the Vietnam War. Just as I recalled all the memories from the era, Van Halen is a characteristic of that era when trying to explain what the culture was like during the times. Eddie, not only did you leave a mark on all the individuals, but you left a mark on entire generations! You left a mark on the culture! We will miss you, Bud! The road goes on forever...
