We can all use a little support right now MING (Medical Interpreter Network of Georgia) is hosting 3 upcoming support group meetings for interpreters who may be experiencing stress or anxiety about the Coronavirus pandemic. Therapist, counselor, and translator, Edurne Paula Chopeitia, will facilitate several 1.5 hour ongoing support group meetings tailored for Interpreters during the next few weeks (1:00pm on 4/27, 5/4, and 5/11). Last night Parasite won best picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, making it the first foreign-language film to ever win the best picture award (in addition to winning best director, best international feature film, and best original screenplay). This would certainly have been unlikely without a skilled translation of the film. Translation for the win! This article explores the challenges of subtitling: The subtitlers don’t translate literally or simply deliver the words, but they identify the message the director intends and ‘design the language’ so that the foreign viewers can arrive at the core of the message . . . . It’s a complicated job that requires both professional insight in filmmaking and linguistic proficiency.

A fascinating story of two young brothers who created the ADLaM alphabet, which is now also available online. "ADLaM is an acronym that translates to 'the alphabet that will prevent a people from being lost.'" "The Fulbhe, or Fulani, people were originally nomadic pastoralists who dispersed across West Africa, settling in countries stretching from Sudan to Senegal and along the coast of the Red Sea. More than 40 million people speak Fulfulde some estimates put the number at... between 50 and 60 million in around 20 African countries. But the Fulbhe people never developed a script for their language, instead using Arabic and sometimes Latin characters to write in their native tongue, also known as Fulani, Pular and Fula. Many sounds in Fulfulde can’t be represented by either alphabet, so Fulfulde speakers improvised as they wrote, with varying results that often led to muddled communications." See more

The webinar will review and compare the code of ethics for interpreters in both healthcare and legal settings and is an important refresher course on handling difficult situations in interpretation in which ethical decisions must be made.
