How old were you when you first sat down at the piano? For some of us, it was an immediate joy. The rest of us needed a few lessons before we warmed up to the joy of playing the piano. Igor Stravinsky was born on this date in 1882. He is considered one of the most innovative and influential composers of the 20th century. He is best known for his three ballets: The Firebird, Petrushka, and the controversial The Rite of Spring. Our favorite anecdote involves a piece done for a Broadway revue. The producer, Billy Rose, commissioned Scènes de ballet for his Broadway revue. After the performance, he sent Stravinsky this telegram: YOUR MUSIC GREAT SUCCESS STOP C...OULD BE SENSATIONAL SUCCESS IF YOU WOULD AUTHORIZE ROBERT RUSSELL BENNETT [TO] RETOUCH ORCHESTRATION STOP BENNETT ORCHESTRATES EVEN THE WORKS OF COLE PORTER Stravinsky telegraphed back: SATISFIED WITH GREAT SUCCESS. Happy Birthday to the one and only Igor Stravinsky!
