THE FINAL STRAW June 18, 1954 Albert L. Patterson was shot to death in front of his office, on 5th Avenue, in Phenix City. Patterson just won the election for ...Alabama Attorney General. He was due to testify about voter fraud, election numbers being changed. His death triggered the city-wide cleanup of all vices in Phenix City. Many of you like local history in general. Good news, there is a new historical book fresh off the press, put together by James Centric. Three years of hard research and face-to-face meetings to gather the most complete historical book of Phenix City and Russell County. This is like no other local book. It’s practically a historical timeline of events as it occurred from prehistoric to 2018. And unlike the other books, this covers the WHOLE COUNTY, not just Phenix City or... a handful of families. Nothing is hidden, told as it is. 400 pages! Only $30 if you pickup, or $37 delivered. Great Christmas gifts! Limited number of print with color images. Call James at 334-480-0767 to purchase and arrange. He’ll even sign it for you for FREE! Proceeds help the Russell County Historical Society. See more
The Russell County-Phenix City Alabama Bicentennial Committee formed in January 2017 to plan local events and projects in celebration of Alabama's 200th anniver...sary of statehood. Today we hosted our final meeting to reflect on a series of committee projects, to include the Albert Patterson statue project, short documentary film project, "A History of Russell County and Phenix City" authored by James (Jim) Centric, and interviews with members of the local community (www.phenixcityhistory.com), as well as to honor the memory and contributions of Tommy Boswell, former Russell County Sherriff, public servant, and fellow committee member. Thank you to our colleagues for your hard work and dedication to this series of successful projects over the last three years! The late great Bob Gibson (RIP) was one of many soon to be Major League Baseball players who played for, or against, Columbus’ minor league teams and trodden on historic Golden Park. Who’s excited about Columbus reviving baseball next season? I hope they’re called the Scrambled Dogs or the Ribs. Thank you Benjamin Watson for the image and reminder! You can request a customized local sports tour by calling Vicinity Tours at 762-822-6251.

Columbus, GA was one of the first venues for a fledgling pro sport called NASCAR. The track was located off Blackmon Road. Newer documentaries, including one shown on Fox Sports have changed the league’s official starting year to the year after the first races, which included Columbus. My opinion, a PR move to erase the tragedies that occurred on July 25th. On that day, NASCAR hosted two races, Columbus and in North Carolina. ... At the Columbus racetrack, an 8-year old (Brannon) died from a wreck. On the final lap, the lead car, got a flat tire forcing the car to swerve towards the fencing. The car collided into the fence propelling one of the fence posts into the lad. Later, on that same day at North Carolina race, a driver died from injuries from a crash during that race. He would be the first driver death for the league, or you would think. Columbus boasts its own Sam McQuagg. He was NASCAR’s Rookie of the Year in 1965; and won the 1966 Firecracker 400 in Daytona.
The true history of Juneteenth and a shocking fact about Kentucky! Thank you Johnnie Warner
Sad to see the historic Holland Mansion (in Phenix City) in flames.
In honor of #WorldSoftballDay, here’s a reminder than the 1996 Olympic Softball tournament was played here in Columbus. Golden Park hosted teams from around the world including those from the USA, China, and Australia, to name a few. View object: https://bit.ly/2MjQaaN
