Remember last week’s post about the swallowtail caterpillar? Fresh from the chrysalis.....Eastern Black Swallowtail. Hello beautiful!!
The Coastal Gardens is currently looking for a part time Gift Shop Attendant. If you or someone you know are interested in joining our team, please share the attached link! https://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/138454
Look who’s eating our fennel! But is it a Monarch or Swallowtail caterpillar? These two flamboyant caterpillars look very similar but there are a few ways to tell the difference. First, Monarch caterpillars will only munch on varieties of milkweed. Swallowtails prefer the parsley family including carrots, celery, fennel and dill. Secondly, check out the pattern. Monarch caterpillars will only have stripes while Swallowtail caterpillars sport a pattern of stripes and dots. Thirdly, Swallowtail caterpillars do not have obvious antennae while the Monarch caterpillar displays a set at either end (although only one pair is the real deal the other pair is to confuse predators) So this hungry hombre is. the Swallowtail caterpillar!
Beautiful! We are so fortunate!!
