Contemplating the next trout dinner on Lake Petit. Another great shot by @markgreen_ga #bigcanoe #bigcanoecommunity
Some Native Americans associate the woodpecker's incessant tapping with nature’s heartbeat. In Big Canoe, we associate it with them really liking the taste of bugs. Grubs galore! #BigCanoe #BigCanoeCommunity

The most efficient way to get your POA questions answered is to hit the Ask the POA button on the POA homepage at https://bigcanoepoa.uvdesk.com/ . Whether reporting a fallen tree, learning about your favorite amenity, or boning up on community rules, you can find the info you are looking for -- or you'll get connected to the right person for the answer. There’s good reason why 1,300+ queries have been addressed since Ask the POA was launched last summer. Just ask!

Want to play a bigger part in our community? Consider signing up for the Water Committee, which is seeking new members for three-year terms that start Feb. 1, 2021. Must be a Big Canoe Property Owner in good standing w/ applicable professional experience, skills, and abilities. Accounting/CPA credentials required. For more info, read the charter at rb.gy/xrrlt3 or contact Phillip Legg at [email protected], who also is accepting bios/resumes.
The Capital Contribution Fund is up for a vote by Big Canoe Property Owners Dec. 2-30 and the proposed fee is something similar communities have had in place for decades. Read about how a private mountain community very much like Big Canoe Connestee Falls in Bravard, N.C. has since 1996 used a fee akin to the proposed CCF to fund the $2.5 million rejuvenation of its clubhouse and build other facilities: https://bit.ly/3leT68z More info on the CCF: bigcanoeccf.org
Lake Petit from another angle: Kayaking on a perfect Big Canoe autumn day along the backside of Eagle Island. Turn it up to hear the sound of total relaxation.
The Lake Petit dam was turned into a Veterans Day memorial this morning by Boy Scout Troop 20 and North Georgia Veterans, in concert w/ the POA and Wood Workers, through their inspiring Military Tribute Banner Program. The team hoisted 82 banners honoring U.S. military veterans with Big Canoe ties. Up thru Sat., Nov. 14, they also will fly on the weeks of Memorial Day and Independence Day. Randy Lewis, one of the numerous gifted photographers we have in Big Canoe, has spent a lot of time documenting the Lower Falls. For 15 years, to be exact. Check out his YouTube video on his fixation with one of the most beautiful spots in our community: https://bit.ly/3oTK2s4
The Capital Contribution Fund is a fair way to maintain the nearly 50-year-old infrastructure of Big Canoe and to fund enhancements that perpetuate our standing as the preeminent mountain community. Property Owners vote Dec. 2-30 on the one-time $2,500 fee, assessed to new homeowners at closing, akin to those in comparable communities in the SE. Learn how the CCF would lessen the financial burden on current homeowners: https://bigcanoeccf.org/
In the aftermath of the recent storm, AECD manager Treena Parish reminds us: All fallen tree limbs and trunks must be in full contact with the ground; and root balls need to be stood back up, removed, or incorporated into the landscape design (such as hidden by trees or shrubs). Property Owners are responsible for cleaning up the area 75 feet from the road minus the right of way. Questions?: [email protected] or (706) 268-3394
What are you doing with your extra hour?
These last few days have reminded us that so many people, from volunteers to POA staffers, are tirelessly working to ensure that Big Canoe keeps humming. Among them, the Trails Committee was hard at work on Friday cutting fallen trees and making sure that trails were passable. However, some trails still have issues, such as the red trail at High Gap, which is closed and being worked on today, and Choctaw. For details on which trails are open: https://bigcanoetrails.com/
We're getting there. Electric service was restored to many areas of Big Canoe around 3 p.m. today and most if not all service should be restored by Saturday. Also, both the Recycling Center and the Clubhouse are open. All amenities will operate according to standard business hours effective Sat., Oct. 31.
Wondering what to do with that gaudy basement couch or your forgotten chia pet collection? Hit the monthly Bulk Trash Day at the Borrow Pit on Hubbard Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Oct. 31. Pro tip: arrive on the early side before the bins fill. Bulk trash rate: $5 per auto, $7 per SUV, $10 per truck. Shredding service: $5 per small box, $10 per banker's box; Donations including usable household items, clothes, etc., also accepted for the community thrift store.
Pay it forward with your frozen food items. If you were among the unlucky who lost power this week and are helplessly watching your frozen items thaw, donate to Cares. They’re taking any frozen, unexpired food in original packaging as well as canned or boxed items to distribute to the needy in Pickens County until noon today or from 10 a.m. to noon on Sat., Oct. 31. Cares is at 89 Cares Drive in Jasper behind the Community Thrift Store.
Reason #437 for why we love Big Canoe: Property Owner Ron Goff heard about some neighbors losing power and/or water courtesy of Hurricane Zeta. As a result, Ron, who has an ice machine business, graciously decided to offer free ice to anyone through Sunday from the machine he operates at the Marina. How cool is that?
Ah, normalcy -- at least on the restaurant front. The Clubhouse is open for dinner tonight, but golf courses are to remain closed. Tomorrow, the Wellness Center, the Raquet Club and the Marina are open. For more details on what the hurricane didn't nix: /https://mailchi.mp//road-rejuvenation-on-10-big-canoe-stre
