Edwards-Pitman historians surveyed the West Broad School, one of the first public elementary schools in Athens built for Black children. The original school building was replaced with the current building (pictured below) in 1938, and expanded in the 1950s as part of equalization efforts in the state. #Edwards-Pitman #fieldsurvey #history

Mulberry Grove (Houston County, GA) was constructed circa 1832 by the Bryan family, some of the earlier settlers of the Kathleen area. Notable features of the house are the double chimneys on the south and north elevations of the house, the original kitchen that has been attached to the house by an enclosed breezeway, and the rain porch at the front. The family cemetery to the south of the house contains interments that range from 1947 to 2006.

Our ecologists spotted this little mink while surveying in South Carolina. Mink can be found near water sources and wetlands in nearly every continental state, though their numbers can be sparse in the arid west. Check out the Mink Fact Sheet from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to read more about mink https://georgiawildlife.com//wrd/pdf/fact-sh/2005_mink.pdf

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is a native plant typically found in moist soils and pollinators love it! If you’re looking to attract more butterflies to your garden, consider picking up this species from a native plant nursery.

Edwards-Pitman historian Alexandra Green and ecologist Kayla Theilig explore Brooks County, Georgia this summer. Here are a few tips for staying safe during fieldwork as temperatures begin to rise: *Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking water steadily; don't wait until you're thirsty. *Take frequent breaks in the shade.... *Wear loose fitting, lightly colored and lightweight clothes. *Look out for your teammates! It is important to recognize the signs of heat stress and take the proper precautions. P.S. What’s summer without ice cream? Stay cool and eat ice cream! #Edwards-Pitman #SummerFun #healthandsafety

Our ecologists found this brown water snake (Nerodia taxispilota) enjoying a meal on the Savannah River. Harmless water snakes are often mistaken for the venomous water moccasin, aka cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus). Can you tell the difference? Check out the link below for a helpful brochure on how to determine the difference between a cottonmouth and our native water snakes from Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. https://georgiawildlife.com//brochures/WaterMoccasinBrochu

Artifact Photography An important aspect of any archaeological project is reporting the findings of the investigation. A major part of that task lies in documenting artifact recovery. Edwards-Pitman has a dedicated artifact photography facility as a part of our Archaeological Laboratory where digital photography and various photographic aids are used to create high-quality images of the artifacts we recover. These photographs are used in our reports and are submitted to curation facilities to become a permanent and important part of the archaeological record. Our Archaeological Lab Assistant, Emily Longacre, oversees E-P’s photo lab and is responsible for the high-quality photographs we produce for our archaeological projects.
