Happy Monday, folks! As part of our #EmergingLeadersOfGeorgia series, meet Beulah Rucker Oliver, an amazing educator who was inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement (@GaWomenAchieve) Hall of Fame in 2012. Rucker was born in 1888 as the daughter of African American sharecroppers. Rucker loved school, so much so that when she was unable to pay tuition, she offered to work her way through it. She graduated with honors and worked hard to establish her own school, The Indu...strial School. Rucker herself taught at public and private schools and provided music lessons, but in-between, she attended Savannah State College. She received her degree in 1944 at age 56. Despite racist and sexist accusations that a Black woman couldn’t run a school, Rucker persevered and opened her first school, Norwood Street in Banks County. She then moved her school to nearby rural areas where she taught the African-American community. In the 1950s, the Rucker’s legacy, The Industrial School, merged with the City of Gainesville school district. For her work, Rucker received numerous awards. She is responsible for teaching many African American children and adults in her community, and The Educational Foundation and Museum Beulah Rucker Inc. was set up in her honor. It’s Monday, so we are continuing our #Emerging LeadersOfGeorgia series by introducing you to Ethel Harpst! Harpst was inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement (@GaWomenAchieve) Hall of Fame in 2012. Harpst was born in 1883, and she is most known for the love she had for children. She began her career by working many years at the McCarty Settlement House in Cedartown, Georgia, where she taught orphaned children whose parents had died of illness. She opened the Ethel Har...pst Home in 1924 and took as many children in as the building would allow. She traveled around to raise money for a new home, and eventually James Hall was built in time for the staggering increase in orphans during the Great Depression. Ethel’s cause caught the eye of the wealthy Pfeiffer family from New York who, over the span of 20 years, funded the construction of many other buildings so that an entire campus was built. Today, this campus is the Murphy-Harpst residential program, a program where severely abused children can reside and gain treatment. Hundreds of children have benefited from the program.
