A few weeks ago our garden was crawling with caterpillars, so we decided to bring some inside to observe their metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the lifecycle process by which an animals changes from an immature form to an adult form. As you can see with the black swallow tail below, this has several steps. First, an egg hatches into a larva (the caterpillar). Next, the caterpillar envelops itself in a chrysalis (only moths spin silk cocoons). Finally, the chrysalis breaks open and the adult butterfly emerges.
