Welcome back to Step One Academy. Thank you for joining us for a premiere of the seventh episode of Music Appreciation Series: The organ: the king of the instru...ments! It was such an honor to speak with Dr. Paul Thornock, Director of Music at beautiful Savannah Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Pope Francis recently issued a decree granting the Cathedral the title of Minor Basilica. Nationwide, there are just 87 churches, including 18 cathedrals, that carry this designation. For more information about The Cathedral visit https://savannahcathedral.org/about/ Dr. Thornock is an accomplished organist, conductor and artistic director. He holds the Master of Music in Organ Performance and Literature degree from the University of Notre Dame, as well as Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. In this interview with our host Dr. C, Dr. Thornock told us a story about the organ, its origins, his favorite composers, his musical beginnings, and how his day as an organist and chorus master at Cathedral looks like. You will also find out about the mechanics of this majestic instrument, type of material used in building one, and some interesting facts about his footwear used for playing the pedals. Enjoy this rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the instrument, and to witness up close one of the stages of difficult job or renovating The Cathedral`s organ. Please check back often for new installments and featured presentations. Next Thursday, June 25th at 5pm is time for new quest and new instrument.
