Yesterday, a small group of pilots and staff members got together to help us with our road clean-up effort of Burkhalter Gap Road. Burkhalter has been cared for by hang glider pilots for many years, and we want to do what we can to help keep it clean! Lookout Mountain Flight Park is happy to announce that Dean Funk is coming on board starting in January 2021 as Director of Marketing and Social Media. He will, also, serve as LMFP’s Official Staff Photographer and Videographer. Additionally, Dean will be instructing on the hills AND returning as a tandem instructor. LMFP will be working with Dean on developing a mentoring program focused on flying skills for all H2s and above mountain pilots. We hope you are all staying safe while dreaming of flying! For all of our Facebook fans, we wanted to give you an update on our current procedures. Our office is currently closed to the public to aid in the safety of our staff and customers. ... We will remain open Thursday-Monday from 9 AM EST- 6 PM EST to answer all of your questions via phone call at 706-383-1292 or via email at [email protected] We ask that all spectators, visitors, and pilots wear a mask on our property and practice social distancing at all times. Help us help you: If you see crowded areas, avoid them until the crowd has dispersed! Tandem Operations: Our check-in station has moved outside underneath our Pro-Shop to accommodate you. During check-in: You will be required to wear a mask. We will also be taking your temperature with a non-touch forehead thermometer and spraying your hands with sanitizer before you complete your paperwork. Should you exhibit a fever of 100.4 or higher we would then ask you to reschedule. During your flight: You will be required to wear a face mask for the entire duration of the tandem flight. Passengers are located inches away from the pilot's face. We love our pilots and want to keep them as safe as possible! All equipment used (harnesses, helmets, safety glasses) is sanitized after each individual use for your safety. Weather permitting, we are open for tandem flights Thursday-Monday. This is the first time in our history that we have raised club membership dues, but we live in unprecedented times and are seeing continually rising costs from things like insurance coverage and equipment fees. We pilots are always dreaming about getting up, but sometimes you just really want to get down! When you gotta get down fast in a paraglider without losing forward progress, you pull "big ears"; an intentional collapse of the outer tips of your wing. This advanced maneuver reduces the surface area of your wing, increasing your wing loading and giving you a faster descent rate without sacrificing speed. A very useful tool, pulling big ears does come with some risks; by initiat...ing this partial collapse you increase the angle of attack of your wing, bringing you closer to your stall point. This can make things risky in turbulent air where you don't have as much tolerance for loss of airspeed. Useful in the right situations, make sure to talk to an instructor before trying it out for yourself. A big happy happy to our fearless leader Matt Taber! Today he celebrates his 67th revolution around the giant orb we call the sun! This has been a tough year for all of us. Heavy rains had our LZ flooded all winter and we weren't able to run tandems between December and March. Then COVID hit. Thankfully Matt fought to allow our launch to stay open for solo pilots to escape the stress of quarantine and fly this spring during some of the best conditions we've had in years. Thi...ngs are looking up, but the virus is stewing all around us. In the hope of making LMFP and the sports of hang gliding and paragliding as viable as possible for future generations, Matt has invested more and more money into renovating our launch and making it the best free flight mecca it can be. The first round of sod is being delivered tomorrow. If you can help out, please do. Lifetime memberships go directly to supporting our launch expansion.
