CALLING ALL VETS CALLING ALL VETS We need your help in spreading the word that this Saturday May 1st is the day that the American Legion is asking folks to stop by and donate money for a POPPY. These funds are used for Veterans that are in need in our local area. These places that are being set up are Piggly Wiggly, Tractor Supply, Lowe’s, and Petsense in the Publix shopping area. Stop by these merchants tomorrow and thank them for letting the Legion raise funds for the V...eterans in need. Poppy USA start Across the Atlantic, a woman named Moina Michael read In Flanders Field in the pages of Ladies’ Home Journal that November, just two days before the armistice. A professor at the University of Georgia at the time the war broke out, Michael had taken a leave of absence to volunteer at the New York headquarters of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), which trained and sponsored workers overseas. Inspired by McCrae’s verses, Michael wrote her own poem in response, which she called We Shall Keep Faith. As a sign of this faith, and a remembrance of the sacrifices of Flanders Field, Michael vowed to always wear a red poppy; she found an initial batch of fabric blooms for herself and her colleagues at a department store. After the war ended, she returned to the university town of Athens, and came up with the idea of making and selling red silk poppies to raise money to support returning veterans.

Sons of American Legion Coming to Moultrie L-R: American District 12 Cdr Ray Humphrey, Jonathon Reynolds, Sons 335 Cdr Josh Reynolds, Steven Greene, Sons Distri...ct Cdr Bob Carpenter, (Hidden is Cody Humphrey), Chris Manders, Sons 21 Cdr Dale Gay and Tommy Treadway! Sons of American Legion are having an informational meeting prior to the Legion meeting on Sept 18 at 6 pm. Sons, as it is commonly called within the Legion, are an international organization of direct (or step/adopted) male descendants of deceased wartime veterans or Legionnaires. Honoring their ancestors by joining the Sons in a supportive environment, Sons often individually choose to further honor their ancestors by assisting veterans in projects such as the upcoming Sunbelt Expo fundraiser for the weekly veterans' bus. Sons that do support this fundraiser will receive a free pass to the Expo. Annual Dues for the Sons are only $10/year and limited scholarships are available from the Legion for those in need. Sons are active in Tifton, since 1978, and recently conducted an equipment auction fundraiser at the fairgrounds there. Pictured are the Sons from Sylvester which take pride in raising money for Post 335 and projects such as the huge beautiful flags you may have seen posted throughout Sylvester on Memorial Day weekend. Anyone wanting more information on the Sons may attend the informational meeting at the rear of the History Museum of Colquitt County on Sept 18 at 6 pm or call 873-1108. A temporary weekday office is also being established within Christian Books and More, with support of Legionnaire Jim Soos, for use in meeting, passing out information and one-on-one discussions.

Our Post 324, District 12 and Sons District 12, supported a successful fundraiser, at the October 2018 Expo, for the weekly veterans' bus that leaves the Moultrie Walmart at 7 am every Thursday. The bus, operated by volunteers from the Southwest Georgia Veterans Activities committee, is a free comfortable ride for our sick & injured veterans with breakfast purchased by the committee. They are able to eat on their letdown tables and then recline to rest. The bus also pick...s up in Coolidge, Thomasville, Boston, Quitman & Valdosta before delivering them to the Lake City VA clinic. They can catch the shuttle there to Gainesville for more extensive treatment. They are assisted by bus volunteers to ensure they make their appointments & the return trip at 2:30 pm. They are fed on the return trip with food prepared by area churches. We at the Legion are blessed to help! Thank you to all the donors, prospective Sons 324 and Expo attendees who regularly help too! We are expecting another fundraiser in Spring 2019 to help with eventually replacing our bus. Keep checking the Moultrie Observer newspaper & website for updates, please. See more
